Chronic kidney disease; It is a health problem that is common, is detected late, causes a great economic burden for the patient and the country, and can be treated when the right methods are used. Although chronic kidney disease cannot be diagnosed based on the patients' complaints, frequent urination at night and the development of edema may be warning signs of kidney failure. Some preventive measures can be taken to avoid contracting the disease. Prof. from the Department of Internal Medicine and Nephrology. Dr. Şehmus Özmen made suggestions to protect against kidney diseases in 8 steps.
1- Water consumption should not be neglected
Water consumption is very important to protect kidney health. Particular attention should be paid not to dehydration, to eliminate loss of appetite, to eat properly, to fluid losses due to diarrhea and vomiting, and to replace the lost fluid. Although it is not an absolute rule for healthy people, it is generally recommended to consume 2-3 liters of fluid per day.

In case of kidney failure, One of the most important factors in its emergence and progression is hypertension. It is known that one in every three people in our country has hypertension and only one in three patients receives treatment. Controlling blood pressure is one of the important points in preventing kidney failure. Therefore, hypertension patients must be followed under the supervision of a doctor.
3- Salt consumption should be limited
The average daily salt consumption recommended for healthy individuals is 5-6 grams. Although it should be less, daily salt consumption in Turkey is approximately 15-16 grams. Excessive salt intake is associated with hypertension, heart diseases, edema and kidney diseases. In order to protect kidney health, patients and healthy adults should reduce salt consumption.
4- Diabetics should pay attention to their blood sugar
Diabetes is the most important cause of chronic kidney failure. is the reason. It causes kidney failure in one in every three patients. Controlling blood sugar in diabetic patients, that is, keeping it at target values, is one of the most important factors in preventing kidney disease.
5- Arm esterol should be treated
Cholesterol is known to be a risk factor for vascular occlusion. Vascular occlusions caused by diabetes and hypertension also negatively affect the kidneys. For this reason, it is important to control cholesterol, especially in patients with diabetes and hypertension.
6. It should not be forgotten that smoking causes kidney diseases
Smoking, which is the cause or trigger of many diseases, also negatively affects kidney health. Quitting smoking is an important factor that prevents the progression of chronic kidney disease. Because smoking increases blood pressure, causes blood clots and vascular occlusion. This situation triggers kidney diseases.
7- Physical activity is one of the precautions to be taken
Sports and exercise are important for body health. Regular physical activities are one of the most important factors in preventing obesity. Considering that obesity will have a close relationship with diabetes and hypertension or have a negative impact on kidney health in other ways, physical activity can be considered one of the precautions to be taken.
8- Unnecessary drug use should be avoided
Unnecessary drug consumption is an important cause of kidney disease. Theoretically, all medications can negatively affect kidney function. However, anti-inflammatory painkillers, some antibiotics, and contrast agents used in angiography or tomography damage the kidneys.
