There may be environmental stresses that initiate or aggravate depression, but the initiating external stress factor may not always be present and is not necessary. Some people are genetically predisposed to depression. The rate of individuals suffering from mental distress in their families is higher than the society average. If we talk about the symptoms of depression in more detail; Losing the joy of living and not enjoying life, being in a sad and distressed state that is noticeable from the surroundings, difficulty in concentrating, absent-mindedness, difficulty in remembering, getting angry easily and crying easily, feeling lack of energy, tired and exhausted, feeling pain in the head or other parts of the body. , inability to start a job, decreased desire to do work, decreased appetite (sometimes increased), inability to fall asleep, waking up frequently at night, waking up early and tired in the morning (sometimes excessive desire to sleep), Symptoms such as staying at home, wanting to be alone, being disturbed by crowds and noise, irritability, pessimism, hopelessness, not being able to think of positive things, feeling worthless, inadequate, incompetent, guilty, seeing oneself as ugly, and wanting to die are common.
Untreated. Depression can last up to a few weeks, or it can continue for several months, several years, or longer. This disease The degree of severity varies from person to person. In some cases, it is mild and the person's daily life is slightly affected, and it is not noticed by the people around them. In some cases, it may be of moderate, severe or very severe severity and must be treated on an outpatient basis or by being hospitalized.
The thing we fear most during the depression process is that the person will take his own life (suicide). Sometimes, in very severe cases (depression with psychotic features), a person may kill or attempt to kill his/her relatives and then himself/herself. Depression is a disease that can be treated to a large extent. In treatment, various medications are given according to the patient's needs. In addition, ECT (shock therapy), daylight therapy, occupational therapies, psychoeducation, family therapies, various psychotherapies and social treatments are also applied.
