Psychosocial Effects of Smartphones

Smartphones have made some areas of our lives easier since the moment they entered our lives. It has become one of the indispensable elements of our daily and business lives. We can communicate in different ways (SMS, internet, call), take photos/videos, access the information we need, play various games, in short, we can meet many of our needs with this small machine in our hands.

But there are so many things that are in our lives and their benefits. It is undeniable that phones have an extremely negative impact on work, school, family and social life due to excessive use in recent years. Complaints from employers that employees are too interested in their phones and do not pay attention to work, from teachers that students do not pay enough attention to their lessons because of being on their phones, and from spouses that family sharing and spending time together have decreased significantly, are increasing day by day.

It can be seen that unfortunately these phones are not intended for use. By being used outside, it has become harmful both individually and socially. Technology-related addictions have taken their place in the psychology literature. Treatments on this issue are applied in clinics abroad. The treatments applied are similar to the treatments applied for other addictions (alcohol, substances, etc.). In addition, as in other addictions, many people do not accept that they are addicted to technology addictions.

Let's ask ourselves a few questions now and see if we use the phone just as a tool or if we are addicted.

Do you always carry your smartphone with you? Do you experience intense tension and panic when you don't take it with you or when you forget it?

Do you check your phone as soon as you wake up and right before going to bed?

Do your family and friends get angry when you take out your mobile phone to check?

Do you have swollen eyes from looking at the phone screen for hours? Do you have physical complaints such as burning sensation, pain in your neck due to speaking with your head tilted, or stiffness?

Do you ever postpone important meetings or work due to being on the phone? Do you turn to your phone every spare moment?

While driving Do you ignore your phone and look at your phone?

Do you use the phone to escape from daily problems or unwanted emotional situations?

Do you feel an intense desire to look at the sounds and alerts coming from the phone as soon as possible?

If most of the answers we give to the above questions are yes, it means that phone use has ceased to be a use and has reached the level of addiction. Phone addiction will negatively affect both the normal flow of life and the person's psychology. If this situation is not taken seriously, it will have very serious consequences in the future. For example, it causes dismissals, marriages to end, and friendships to deteriorate. Another problem that addicts will face is digital dementia, which includes features such as weakening of memory, forgetfulness, and mental laziness, which occur as a result of constantly using the phone's features (reminders, calculator, etc.) instead of our own mind. The risk of Alzheimer's disease in the future increases in these people.

So what should be done to get rid of phone addiction?

If you cannot do these, you should definitely get expert help.

Remember, people lived without mobile phones for thousands of years. Don't make yourself dependent…
