What is Self Awareness?

Why is it important?

Individual awareness is the child's sensory, psychological, mental, social life, etc. It is a profile definition that we can create by looking at each area.

We evaluate the individual awareness of each child in D.I.R Floortime Therapies and shape the floortime therapy room according to the evaluation results of each session. When we shape the therapy room, we can see that the communication between the child and the therapist becomes stronger.

When we start the session with the child, he takes care to remove the objects in the room that may be uncomfortable for him, and plays toys and objects that may be too much for him, and if he is not in communication with the therapist. We take care to remove these objects from the room.

Now, let's deal with the sensory needs of children with individual awareness together and think about what can happen in the child we progress by knowing their individual awareness.

Individual Awareness in a Child:

<
  • Vestibular Sensory Sensitivity
  • Proprioceptive Sensory Sensitivity
  • Auditory Sensory Sensitivity
  • Oral Motor Sensory Sensitivity
  • Tactile Sensory Sensitivity
  • Smell Sense Sensitivity
  • Visual Spatial Sensory Sensitivity
  • Visual Sensory Sensitivity
  • Motor planning skills
  • Each of the sensory sensitivities consisting of 9 items you see above is very important for us. It is very important for us to evaluate each one individually. Let's examine the sensory profiles together with an example.

For example; Ali is a very active child, swings nonstop on a swing (vestibular sensitivity), takes any object in his mouth (oral motor seeking), immediately closes his ears when he hears loud noises (auditory sensitivity). He likes toys a lot, but

Ali is a child whose sensory profiles we can see in most children. it also distracts him a lot (visual search).

We want to create a space for him by respecting these sensory profiles in our sessions with Ali

For example: We can try playing on the swing. He can give him a massage tool or food that can help him because he is in search of an oral motor. trace. We can use calmer effects for fear of loud tones. We can keep few toys in the room to reduce his visual search.

In this way, we can help Ali to relax and ensure his regulation easily, and we can communicate with him.

In addition to these sensory profiles, a situation that most affects their individual awareness is, of course, the situations that they are under the influence of psychologically at that moment.

    For example;

He may be upset by an accident on the way to the sessions, he may perceive the Floortime Therapy center as a doctor's place and he may be afraid of this situation. He may have been hungry when he came to the session. Or the child may have personal characteristics. He's a shy kid. He has an angry, angry, irritable nature.

Examining and considering all these profiles one by one shows us that we need to take a healthier path in therapy.

As every adult says, everyone is different from each other, so their children are different from each other regardless of their diagnosis. Communication is always stronger when we accept that the child is an individual without going into stereotypes. Isn't communication the most important thing?

All our efforts are for communicating..

Let's not forget that communication is not just about talking..

Communication is the message we convey to the other party with our whole being..

Making this message meaningful and making sense of this message is the most important task of us therapists and families. .
