"Every part of me hurts",
"Even though I got enough sleep at night, I wake up in the morning feeling tired and in pain, as if I had never slept at all", "I am exhausted, I don't want to do any work, reluctance , there is forgetfulness" …
These complaints may indicate soft tissue rheumatism called Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS).
Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS); It is a chronic soft tissue pain syndrome manifested by widespread pain and tenderness in muscles and joints, sleep disturbance, fatigue, weakness and morning stiffness. The most important feature of the syndrome is extreme sensitivity at certain points of the body.
Fibromyalgia syndrome (soft tissue rheumatism) is an extra-articular rheumatic disease characterized by widespread pain in the body, fatigue, weakness, stiffness and tender points in some parts of the body. . Among the diseases that cause many diseases, fibromyalgia syndrome is at the forefront in terms of workforce loss. Although it is more common in women aged 25-55, the disease can also be seen in men and in childhood. It is more common in people whose education level and economic level are above average.
There is an increase in complaints, especially in cold weather.
Although the cause of the disease is not well known, it is closely related to the level of stress. Sleep disorders, major physical traumas mixed with fear such as a fall or a motor vehicle accident, psychological traumas such as the loss of a loved one, psychological stress, some viral diseases, and some rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis are factors that trigger the formation of the disease. The incidence of the disease in first-degree relatives of people with the disease is increasing.
Pain reduces the quality of life
Pain and widespread pain Sensitivity is the most common complaint. But often, pain is felt more intensely in the neck and waist areas of the body, which are used more. There may also be pain in the shoulders, elbows, knees and hands. Patients state that one side of their body hurts more than the other. The patient may complain that his hands and feet are swollen. However, swelling often cannot be detected on examination. Symptoms such as sleep disturbance, waking up tired in the morning, abdominal and chest pain, numbness in the hands, constipation, diarrhea, stomach ache, pain during menstrual periods, difficulty breathing and getting angry very easily accompany the disease. Half of the patients have tension-type headaches. Frequent urination and urgent urge to urinate are common complaints. In FMS, jaw joint pain, cramps, tinnitus and even dizziness may occur. Depression and anxiety may accompany some patients.
Diagnosing fibromyalgia is not very easy; because there is no laboratory test specific to the disease. However, it may also accompany other underlying diseases (such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus). Therefore, biochemistry and blood tests should be requested and thyroid function tests should be performed. Examinations are usually normal if there is no underlying disease. Radiological examinations can be performed to exclude other diseases (lumbar-cervical disc herniation, arthritis). The presence of widespread pain that has been going on for at least 3 months and the detection of pain in 11 regions when pressure is applied to certain parts of the body (18 predefined tender points) are diagnostic.
Factors that increase complaints about the disease:
Sleep disorder
Fatigue,
Stressful high work tempo,
Psychological tension,
>Influenza infections,
Noise, sitting or standing for long periods of time, staying in the same position for a long time phone on the computer
Always the same repetitive movements
Continuous exposure to electromagnetic stress
Take precautions against Fibromyalgia syndrome!
Fibromyalgia is not a disabling or life-threatening disease, but it opens the door to other diseases and reduces the quality of life, requiring treatment. Treatment may take a long time and medical supervision is required until there is a significant improvement in the symptoms.
Drugs used in the treatment of fibromyalgia syndrome are used to reduce pain, relieve fatigue, regulate sleep and treat depression. For this purpose, sleep regulators and muscle relaxants, especially antidepressants and painkillers, are used. Apart from this, local injections can also be made on sensitive points.
Exercise is a treatment and prevention method for soft tissue rheumatism. Activities such as relaxation exercises, stretching exercises, cardiovascular conditioning exercises, low-intensity walking, swimming and cycling, and water aerobics are especially beneficial.
Patients should not consume substances such as alcohol, cigarettes, tea, cola, and coffee that may affect sleep before going to bed. It is recommended.
In physical therapy applications, positive results are obtained with hot application, deep heaters, and electrical stimulation and massage with pain-relieving properties. Additionally, spa treatments are recommended. Sea sand sun swimming produces very good results.
Climate has no effect on the development of FMS; However, cold and humid weather increases complaints in fibromyalgia syndrome. Hot-dry weather, massage, sports activities and vacations can reduce symptoms.
