What is Endoscopy?
The process of imaging the internal cavities of the body with the help of instruments with a camera at the end is called endoscopy, and the instruments used are called endoscope.
What is Gastroscopy?
Nowadays, flexible It is the short name for the process of imaging the esophagus, stomach and duodenum by entering through the mouth using videoendoscopes. In fact, the procedure performed is esophagogastroduodenoscopy. The mucosa layer covering the inner surface of these organs is examined using a gastroscope. Changes in the mucosa are evaluated by making them more obvious using various dyes, if necessary. Gastroscopy is both diagnostic and functional. It is used for treatment purposes. For diagnosis, biopsy material is taken from mucosal pathologies with the help of forceps and sent for pathological examination. An example of its use for therapeutic purposes is the removal of polyps and small tumors by using various energy devices with the help of instruments passed through the gastroscope. Vascular pathologies can be treated by burning them with a laser probe passed through the gastroscope. Varicose veins in the esophagus can be treated with the help of band ligator or various sclerotherapy methods. Upper digestive tract bleeding can also be stopped by endoscopic procedures such as sclerotherapy, clipping and cauterization. With the help of gastroscopy, strictures in the upper digestive system can be widened by using bougie, balloon, laser or cautery. Again, stenosis and fistulas can be resolved by stenting. Foreign bodies in the upper digestive system can be removed or broken down and excreted through the digestive system. A feeding tube can also be placed endoscopically in the upper part of the stomach and small intestine for nutritional purposes in patients who cannot be fed orally and cannot be fed for a long time.
The procedures I briefly mentioned above are called sedoanalgesia. It is performed by me under the procedure, that is, ensuring that the patient does not feel any pain during the procedure.
What are the Disadvantages of Gastroscopy?
A slight reaction may occur to the drugs used for sedoanalgesia. Additionally, bleeding in the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. The risk of injury and puncture is reported to be very low, around 0.1-0.2%.
