Callus is a skin thickening that occurs in rubbing parts of the body. It is a defense mechanism created by the skin to protect itself. As long as the factor causing callus formation continues, callus will re-form even if it is treated. For this reason, when treating calluses, existing conditions must be corrected to prevent them from forming again.
It generally occurs in areas of the hands and feet that are subject to constant friction. It is mostly seen on the soles of the feet, on and between the toes. The patient feels severe pain when stepping on the hardened and thickened skin. This growth is generally cone-shaped. There is a root called nidus at its base. This is the part that causes the real pain.
The biggest reason for callus formation is constant trauma to that part of the skin. The most responsible factor for calluses seen on the feet is tight, narrow and high-heeled shoes. These especially compress the toes and calluses form on the toes and on the rubbing surfaces of the two toes. In case of calluses on the soles of the feet, walking barefoot and keeping the feet on wet ground is very important. While walking barefoot, stone fragments hitting the soles of the feet or splinters sinking into the feet initiate the formation of calluses. Some people have anatomical deformities in the toes or in the foot itself. Calluses are more common in these people. Such people should definitely choose shoes that suit their feet. Calluses are seen on the hands of students when holding a pencil, and on the elbows of some professions.
The biggest symptom of calluses is pain. This is very noticeable while walking. Pressure on the callus causes severe pain. Various methods have been suggested to get rid of calluses. Aspirin paste, pineapple onion or fig method was applied on the callus. But the results are not encouraging. First of all, a shoe that fits the foot should be preferred. If there is an orthopedic problem, it should be eliminated. After the callus forms, feet are placed in warm water for 10 minutes in the evening. After the callus area softens thoroughly, it is filed with a pumice stone. Thus, dead, hardened tissues are eliminated. After this process, a tampon soaked in white vinegar or baking soda is placed on the callus. With these methods, pain relief the most saved. But it is not a definitive treatment.
Another method for callus treatment is surgical removal of the callus. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. The callus is removed with an elliptical incision. Then the opened area is closed with stitches. The most important issue here is to remove the root part of the callus, called nidus. Unless the root is removed, recurrence is inevitable. This results in loss of work and power.
