INFANTIL COLIC

Various authors make various definitions for infantile colic. However, the most used definition is; In a healthy baby, it is periodic crying of intestinal origin that lasts at least 3 hours a day, at least three days a week and for at least 3 weeks. However, the extent of excessive crying may vary for each parent. For this reason, the simplest definition can be made as crying that occurs at regular intervals and lasts for the first three months, with no known reason and at a level that disturbs the family. Generally, towards the evening hours, a healthy baby suddenly begins to cry in the form of a high-pitched scream, accompanied by redness on the face, pulling his knees to his stomach, and a few more times. It passes within minutes. Again, a new seizure begins a few minutes later and these cries last for 2-3 hours. The baby cannot be consoled. Increased bowel sounds may be heard in the abdomen. Pain may be relieved by passing gas. Colic usually begins in the first or second week of life. It gets worse in the sixth week. 25% of babies cry more than 3 hours a day. 2-3. It stops spontaneously in the first month, sometimes in the 4th month. It is seen in approximately 20-30% of all babies.

Although the cause is unknown, some theories have been created.

1.Food allergy/intolerance: Many breastfeeding mothers believe that they ingest foods that may cause colic in their babies. Antigens found in cow's milk can also be found in breast milk. Once a baby is sensitized to cow's milk protein (this may be through the placenta, breast milk, or formula given while in the hospital), he or she will have an allergic reaction to cow's milk protein when he or she receives breast milk. Double-blind studies have shown that one-third of persistent abdominal pain is caused by food allergy. Another study has shown that there is a significant relationship between the foods the mother eats and the colic seen in her baby. Especially vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, cow's milk, chocolate and onions eaten by the mother are likely to cause colic in the baby.

Smoking and caffeine consumption during pregnancy also impair the quality of breast milk.

2 .Abnormal peristalsis or too much gas: Higher amounts of hydrogen gas were found in the breath of babies with infantile colic who were fasted for a long time and fed with formula containing lactose, compared to babies without colic. Anc Feeding with lactose-free formula did not create any positive change.

Breast milk and cow's milk fulfill the immunological function with the oligosaccharides they contain, but they also increase the hydrogen in the breath.

3. Increased sensitivity: This Babies' nervous systems are not yet developed and they are more sensitive to stimuli. They may perceive normal gas as painful.

4.Prenatal tension. Colic is more common in babies of mothers who experience psychological tension during pregnancy.

5.Inter-reactive model: Tensions in the parents and Environmental factors can affect the baby's emotions

Treatment:

There is no known cure for colic. However, some precautions may be useful:

First, take your baby to a doctor and check for crying and abdominal pain. Make sure to make a differential diagnosis from other diseases that may cause it.

Make sure your baby is comfortable and full.

Take your baby upright and try to calm him down by giving him small blows on his back.

If bottle feeding takes less than 20 minutes, try feeding with a bottle head with fewer holes. Thus, eliminate the desire to suck.

A quiet and less bright room may help by reducing external stimuli.

Sudden sudden movements that may frighten the baby. Avoid any movements.

If your baby has been crying for more than ten minutes, try laying him/her face down.

For very active babies, wrapping the baby with a blanket may be helpful.

Some babies can be taken with a car ride. Some people can calm down with the sound of a hair removal machine or a vacuum cleaner.

As a parent, remember that your child is a healthy baby, infantile colic will not have any negative effects on your child's growth and development, and will go away on its own after a while, and do not be discouraged.

If you are feeding your baby with formula, change the formula. Soy formula foods can sometimes be beneficial instead of cow's milk protein foods.

If you are breastfeeding your baby, be careful about the foods you eat (try to stay away from cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, cow's milk, chocolate and onions).

The benefits of no medication used in colic have been proven. Causes some side effects most possible
