What is Infantile Colic?

While crying is a good indicator that the baby has a need, it is a poor indicator of what the baby needs. Colic is a benign, self-limiting, prolonged and inconsolable excessive crying condition in a healthy baby.

- More than 3 hours a day, a week. It lasts more than 3 days.

-The baby has no fever, no signs of illness, or developmental delay.

-2-3 days after birth. It starts in weeks 6. It peaks weekly, usually between 12-16. It ends in weeks

-The frequency of occurrence does not vary depending on the gender of the baby, whether it is breastfed or not, and whether it is born early or on time.

-Although the exact cause is not clear, there are various theories. These are changes in the relationship between mother and baby, immaturity of the nervous system, the baby's own temperament, mother's smoking during pregnancy, mother's prenatal stress and anxiety, inability to digest lactose, which is milk sugar, change in the content of the intestinal microbiota, errors in feeding technique, and food allergies (Cow's milk allergy). .

-There is no definitively proven treatment

-The mainstay of treatment is parental support and education. This means that after the physician who follows the baby evaluates and examines the baby in detail, this situation is normal and does not harm the baby. It is based on giving confidence that this will pass over time.

-Another effective treatment is techniques that can help the baby calm down; Holding the baby in your arms and touching him/her, light swaddling, rocking with tiny and light rhythms, a warm bath, massage, listening to white noise that is not too loud, breastfeeding the mother or the pacifier, a small car ride.

- Probiotics More studies are needed on colic prevention and treatment. There are studies showing that it is more effective in babies who are breastfed, and that it may aggravate it more in those who are fed formula.

-Lactase enzyme support or lactose-free formulas are not very useful, further studies are needed.

-From the mother's diet. Although removing some foods may help, the benefit of this has not been shown in all babies. However, in babies with severe colic complaints, cow's milk and product should be excluded from the mother's diet, as there may be an underlying cow's milk allergy. It may be beneficial to remove the milk and use formula used for cow's milk allergy for formula-fed babies.

-The effects of the drugs have not been fully demonstrated.

-Herbal teas are both ineffective and have side effects. It is not recommended.

-Further studies on acupuncture are needed.
