Beware of Bipolar Disorder Problem

Asst.Prof.Dr. Onur Okan Demir stated that bipolar disorder is a mood disorder, formerly known as manic-depressive disorder or bipolar disorder, and said, "The emotional state of the person is widespread and persistent, in a certain period of time (usually It is the dominant emotional state felt for several weeks. A person diagnosed with bipolar disorder experiences various periods such as mania, depression, hypomania and mixed periods throughout his life. After the "manic" period, where he is overly active, energetic, talkative and has increased self-confidence; sadness, crying, worthlessness A "depressive" period may occur in the form of feeling of loss of energy, unhappiness. The person with bipolar disorder may have periods when he/she is in a completely normal mood between these mood changes. Due to risky behaviors, it can harm the person's social relations, work and school life, and if left untreated, it can lead to suicide. Noting that bipolar disorder can start at any age, it often occurs in young adulthood between the ages of 15-35, Assistant Professor Onur Okan Demir said, "It affects 2 out of every 100 people in society." in; It is seen equally in men and women. Bipolar disorder is a lifelong mental disorder, like diabetes or hypertension. The exact cause is not known. However, research shows that chemicals called "neurotransmitters" in the brain affect thought, mood, memory, learning capacity and balance. Stressful life events such as family problems, traumas, and economic reasons may facilitate the emergence of disease periods in people with genetic predisposition. "Consumption of stimulants (such as marijuana, cocaine, amphetamine), excessive consumption of coffee and energy drinks, and insomnia may be effective in the onset of disease periods," he said.

Assistant Professor Onur Okan Demir explained the symptoms of bipolar disorder as follows. ;

"Manic Period: Mania period symptoms usually start suddenly and their duration varies between 2 weeks and 4-5 months.

Enthusiasm, increased energy, hyperactivity, aggression

Decrease in sleep time, increase in sexual desire

Increase in self-confidence, thoughts of having special abilities and powers

Hypomania Period: Hypomania symptoms are a milder condition than mania in that it does not require hospitalization and does not disrupt the person's social relations and work or education life as much as mania.
