Liver Tumors

The liver is the largest organ of the abdomen, completely covering the upper right quadrant of the abdominal cavity. Benign or malignant tumors can be seen in the liver.

Ultrasonography, dynamic liver MRI and dynamic liver tomography are used in the evaluation of masses in the liver. Most of the time, differential diagnosis of masses in the liver can be made with imaging methods.

Benign Tumors of the Liver

The most common benign tumors of the liver are hemangiomas, adenomas, focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH).

Liver hemangiomas – Most often detected incidentally during imaging performed for another reason. These tumors, which are almost always benign, rarely grow large. Even though they can reach giant sizes, surgery is not necessary for hemangiomas that do not cause any signs or symptoms. Surgery is the most important and often the only treatment option for liver hemangiomas that become symptomatic.

Adenomas- Adenomas seen in the liver are closely related to the use of oral birth control pills. They often require surgery due to the high risk of bleeding and the risk of turning into malignant tumors.

Focal Nodular Hyperplasia (FNH)- These non-malignant tumors can be followed without surgery as long as they do not show signs and symptoms.

Malignant Tumors of the Liver

Malignant tumors of the liver are divided into two: tumors that develop from liver tissue and metastatic tumors.

Primary Tumors of the Liver

Hepatocellular Adenocarcinoma- It is the most common malignant tumor of the liver. The most common cause in our country is Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C carriage. It is accompanied by liver parenchymal disease and cirrhosis in most patients. Treatment options include removal of the tumor in the liver (resection), liver transplantation, radiofrequency ablation therapy, transarterial chemoembolization therapy, Iy99 therapy and Sorafenib. The methods that give the patient a chance for treatment are liver resection and liver transplantation. Other methods are complementary or palliative methods.

Chalgiocarcinoma- These are tumors that develop from the bile ducts in the liver. Removing the tumor by liver resection is an effective treatment method.

Metastatic Tumors of the Liver

Due to its rich blood flow and lymphatic system, the liver is one of the organs where tumors of other organs often spread (metastasize). Colon tumors most commonly metastasize. Apart from this, many different cancer tumors such as neuroendocrine tumors, stomach, pancreatic tumors and breast cancers can metastasize to the liver.

Colon Cancer Metastases in the Liver - It is the most common metastatic tumor of the liver. Liver metastases occur in nearly 50% of colon cancer patients. In patients with colon cancer metastases, removal of tumors in the liver is a treatment option.
