Pay Attention to Upper Respiratory Tract Infections in Children

Child Health and Diseases Specialist Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Güvenç said that the decrease in humidity due to heating of closed environments dries the nasal mucosa and this causes the person to have upper respiratory tract infections.
Autumn waiting at our door brings diseases with it. Stating that upper respiratory tract infections, which are common in autumn and winter, are more common in September-October, which is the transition period from summer to winter, due to the cooling of the air, Medistate Kavacık Hospital Pediatric Health and Diseases Specialist Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Güvenç said, "The decreasing humidity due to heating of indoor environments dries the nasal mucosa." This makes the person more susceptible to viruses and/or bacteria that cause upper respiratory tract infections. "Such infections spread rapidly in schools and nurseries, which are closed environments," he said. Stating that sinusitis, otitis media and pneumonia are seen, Güvenç said, “The majority of upper respiratory tract infections are viral, that is, they do not require antibiotics, but the use of antibiotics may be recommended depending on the child's condition. "This decision should definitely be made by a physician, and the family should not start using antibiotics on their own initiative." Stating that antibiotics can be started if physical examination findings or laboratory examination results support bacterial infection, Güvenç said, "Secondary infections may be added to viral infections, in which case antibiotics may be given if deemed appropriate by the physician."

7 WAYS TO PROTECT CHILDREN FROM INFECTION.
Stating that some precautions can be taken to protect children from infection, Güvenç listed the most important protective methods as follows:
•Babies and children should be kept as far away from crowded environments as possible. They should be prevented from entering.
•Hands should be washed frequently with soapy water, body hygiene should be taken into consideration. Food items rich in nutrient should be included in the daily nutrition program.
