Spiritual Development and Technology in Children

Unfortunately, in today's technological age, the lively, running around and having fun children that we are used to seeing in parks have been replaced by asocial, unhappy and aggressive children who sit at home in front of the screen for hours. Children are now looking at the screen, not at each other. Of course, the benefits of technology products such as telephones, televisions and internet, which make life easier, support children's access to information, research, personal development such as problem solving, productivity and critical thinking, and which can be considered a great blessing, cannot be denied. However, it is known that this potential power, when not used correctly and effectively, brings with it some problems, especially for sensitive and vulnerable children. In this article, I will talk about the problems that may be encountered in young children in terms of their psychosocial development.

Screens are a serious danger for 0-2 years old

The mental and spiritual development of children is the fastest and with this, However, the most sensitive period is 0-2 years of age. Exposure of children at this age to screens can cause serious problems. After the human baby is born, it tries to understand and recognize itself and its surroundings through its 5 senses. During the first years of life, babies must interact with people. He should hear a voice addressing him in response to a sound he makes, laugh at him when he laughs, give the toy back to him when he throws it on the ground, and ask 'did you like it' when he eats a food he likes? But children who grow up in front of screens cannot achieve these. Of all their senses, they can only use their sight and hearing. Since there is no mutual communication required, there is no other person to reflect what the child is feeling in an interaction. For this reason, there will be no healthy mutual interaction to integrate the senses, and the child may face the basic problem of being unable to identify his own emotions and understanding the emotions of others, which is common in individuals with autism. In the clinic, these children show signs of autism, which is characterized by the lack of expected development in social skills such as maintaining adequate eye contact, emotional and social response, and repetitive movements such as swinging and turning.

1 extra hour of TV, 7% Learning loss

Exposure to media influence in early infancy also negatively affects mental and language areas in a manner related to content and duration. A study has shown that for every extra hour spent in front of a screen between the ages of 1 and 4, children have 7 percent more learning difficulties.

Preschool internet limit is 30 minutes

As a result, technology It causes serious harm, especially in the first years of life. For this reason, children under the age of 2 should not be exposed to the internet, TV or computers, and for the preschool age group, internet use should be provided under the supervision of adults, not exceeding 30 minutes a day. In this period when language development is very rapid, the child's development should be supported with appropriate stimuli.
