- IS THERE AN AGE FOR ORTHODONTONIN?
Orthodontic treatment corrects the crookedness of the teeth and the incompatibility between the jaws; It is not only for aesthetics, it helps to prevent possible gum diseases and problems in the lower jaw joint in the future, as well as to correct chewing function and impaired speech. There is no age restriction for orthodontic treatment.
Age is not important in dental corrections; orthodontic treatment can be applied to anyone whose hard and soft tissues surrounding the teeth are healthy. No matter how old the patient is, dental crookedness can be corrected. However, if there is an irregularity in the individual's jawbones (upper jaw or lower jaw forward or backward), in this case orthopedic treatment is required; This treatment should also be done until adolescence.
Milk teeth in children begin to erupt at the age of 6 months and are completed around the age of 2.5. It is unnecessary to worry about the spaces between milk teeth. These spaces are indicative of normal tooth development. On the contrary, if there are tight contacts as in the adult dentition, this makes us think about the possibility of crowding along with lack of space in the future. Permanent teeth begin to erupt at the age of 6-7 and continue until the age of 12.
During this period, when the permanent teeth begin to erupt, it is useful to perform an orthodontic examination to diagnose possible orthodontic problems and stop them, if any. Jaw disorders may require early intervention at the age of 7–8 years. In cases where only the teeth are irregular, treatment usually requires completion of the permanent dentition. In adult patients, teeth can always be moved, but it should not be forgotten that increasing age will reduce treatment duration and tolerance to treatment.
