It is a condition in which the vitreous layer at the front of the eye, called the cornea, is not round but egg-shaped. An astigmatic cornea, like an egg or a rugby ball, has 2 cross-sections, the base curve, one flat and the other steeper at 90 degrees to it. These two different curves refract light with different strengths and cause two images to form on the retina. It is usually congenital. However, it may also develop when the transparent layer is cut through surgical interventions or due to inflammation or trauma in the transparent layer. In at least 90% of cases, astigmatism is not easy to correct. Unless there is a severe disorder in the curvature of the clear layer, the person may not be aware of the refractive error.
Symptoms
Pain in the head and around the eyes, blurred vision, shadowy or double vision, frequent stye formation, long-lasting eyelash base inflammation. Symptoms such as these may be signs of astigmatism. Unless astigmatism is corrected with glasses, contact lenses or refractive surgery, it is not possible to improve complaints such as pain around the eyes and headache.

The reason why patients with astigmatism have a harder time getting used to wearing glasses is that the adaptation to refractive error continues for a while after wearing glasses. For this reason, it is more difficult to get used to astigmatic lenses, and if your doctor has recommended this type of glasses, it is easier to get used to them by using them constantly than to suffer from discomfort by wearing them one day and not wearing them the next. Generally, patients get used to their glasses in 1-2 weeks.
It may not be possible to give the correct size glasses for the eye with astigmatism if the person consults a doctor at a later age. In such cases, the degree of astigmatism can be kept slightly lower to increase the usability of the glasses. Otherwise, when the person wears the glasses, he/she will say that he/she feels dizzy, nauseated, as if he/she is going to fall into the void, as if the ground he/she is stepping on is crooked and raised. There is a high probability of falling down the stairs or having an accident with such glasses.

Apart from using glasses, astigmatism can be treated with toric soft contact lenses, gas permeable hard contact lenses, wavefront lenses, depending on the degree of astigmatism.
