What is Stress, What Happens in My Brain During Stress?

Stress; It is our body's effort to survive. Our brain checks all the warnings coming from outside, questions it and measures its survival. Our brain filters everything we perceive with our 5 senses, including images and sounds. If he looks at whether everything is nearby or hears any sensation, stress symptoms and reactions occur at that moment. When we get stressed, our heart beats fast because our brain thinks that there is a wild animal in front of it and it is running towards it. That's why I need to escape, I need more. Thus, the heartbeat is disrupted and breathing is disrupted. Do you know why most people have stomach problems? Because our brain says, "I need energy right now and I close the applications that consume the most energy." The first system in the body to shut down during stress is the immune system. This is why stressed people get sick very often and cannot recover. It shuts down the digestive system, so what happens? Then, first of all, our mouth becomes dry and cannot digest, therefore, since the food in the stomach cannot be digested, more acid is formed and stomach problems such as burning increase. The reason for all this is that our brain saves our lives. Why does sugar cholesterol increase? You need to be able to run right now, you need energy, but where is the energy? It is in fat and sugar. For this reason, cholesterol stored in the liver is mixed into the blood to be used for energy. And if you are under chronic stress, sugar and cholesterol problems arise after a while. In fact, this magnificent system was made for our survival.

But do you know where the problem is? If we were living in nature hundreds of thousands of years ago and our stressors were war, famine, etc. If there were, yes, these would keep us alive and these stress reactions could occur at certain times. Today's stress factors are much different and there is now constant stress. For example, if it is economic, this is a constant event. It causes chronic stress because it does not happen all at once and takes a long time. Problems at work or in marriage become chronic stress because they persist. Man's mechanism is geared to escape from the tiger. But we also react the same to other stressors we experience now. Technology has evolved Stress factors have developed and changed, but the change in humankind has not caught up with the change in technology. This is exactly the real problem. Freud has a very nice saying: "The price of civilization is paid with neurosis." Our body cannot keep up with the developing technology and cannot develop. That's why we experience psychological and physiological problems.

WHAT HAPPENS IN MY BRAIN DURING STRESS?

In times of stress, the primitive part of our brain actually becomes active. We also call this primitive part the Animal Brain in some groupings. The animal brain part of our brain is the most primitive part. It is the part that corresponds exactly to the back of our neck. Why do we call it the most primitive part? Because it is the part of the brain that is responsible for the most basic vital activities that have existed since ancient times. Our reactions, such as breathing, eating, and reproduction, which are also the most basic and primitive in animals, are produced in this part of the brain that we call the animal brain. This brain becomes active when stressed.

What is the human brain? The front part of the brain is called the brain structure. Why is this place called human? Because it is responsible for the high-level cognitive activities of the brain. It is the part that is responsible for higher level activities such as attention, abstract thinking, problem solving and planning and ensures the further developments of the brain. We have an animal brain and a human brain. So what happens when we get stressed? The animal brain, in particular, is taking over the human brain and taking control. When our life is in danger, the brain decides that there is no need to sit down and solve problems, it is enough to run fast, and activates and suppresses the part we call the animal brain. Think of it this way, the part used by people who pick up a crowbar in traffic and go around is the animal brain part.

So can't we control this? Of course we can check. At least by improving the human brain, we can increase the ability to think. The best solution to this is education. Our brain changes according to 4 different wave sizes. These wavelengths may vary depending on the emotional state you feel or different times of the day.

What is wavelength? A brain named Hans BERGER was able to put the electrical activity of the brain on paper. In our brain, information progresses in the form of electrical current. It is very important that we know these wavelengths so that we can cope with stress. So with this wavelength What are the wavelengths?

1-) BETA WAVELENGTH: It is the fastest wavelength. We enter the beta wavelength when our body is most active. We enter the beta wavelength when we are ready for action, problem solving, and stressed. For example; When we wake up with an alarm in the morning after sleeping at night, the body suddenly switches to beta wavelength because the alarm sound is very loud, or when we suddenly become anxious or angry, the body immediately switches to beta wavelength. So what is the problem with this beta wavelength? It is suitable for getting up for short periods of time, waking up early in the morning, or escaping from somewhere. However, after a certain period of time, that is, when the maximum exceeds half an hour, problems such as rapid heartbeat, increase in blood pressure, cholesterol and decrease in immunity are very common situations in the beta wavelength.

2-) ALPHA WAVELENGTH: A little slower. is the wavelength. It is the wavelength we enter when the body is calm, at rest. In fact, alpha wavelength is the wavelength of peace and happiness. When we are in this wavelength, our immunity increases, our body awareness increases (we feel our body pains), for example; While you are cleaning, you receive a phone call and while you are sitting and talking, you suddenly notice the pain in your body because the body drops to the alpha wavelength. Learning is at its highest level when we are in the alpha wave dimension. When you come home from a busy work schedule, eat your meal and lie down in front of the TV, the body switches to the alpha wave dimension. We do not notice the passage of time while doing our hobbies or hiking, which means we are in alpha. That's why doctors want you to have hobbies because it strengthens immunity. While some are painting, some are spending time with their children, their body is calm, peaceful and in alpha size. In the alpha wavelength, our mind is always at the same time, but in the beta wavelength, it deals with either the anger of the past or the concerns of the future.

3-) THETA WAVELENGTH: The dreamy, sleepy phase is called theta wavelength. The mind repairs itself during sleep through dreams and immunity increases, so regular sleep is very important.

4-) DELTA WAVELENGTH: The deepest sleep phase is dreamless sleep. The body repairs itself, immunity is at its highest level. That's why doctors put some patients in a delta wavelength, that is, a coma, because healing occurs most in the delta wavelength.

This is the wavelength. It is very important for our health to know these things. I want you to know that when you get stressed, the wave size changes and switches to beta wavelength, and beta wavelength is very dangerous.
