Care Recommendations After Nose Surgery

The recovery process after your nose surgery requires time and patience. Your active participation in postoperative care is as important as the surgery itself. Please follow the suggestions listed below. Do not hesitate to ask your doctor about issues you do not understand.

1. When you leave the operating room, you may not be able to breathe through your nose due to the tampons inside your nose. During this period, you should breathe through your mouth. Your doctor will determine how long the tampons stay in your nose.

2. It is important that you drink enough fluids. Sips of fruit juice, water and light drinks will help relieve the dry mouth caused by mouth breathing. Do not use straws. Eat soft, easily chewable foods. Use gel or lip balms to keep your lips moist.

3. Only use medications prescribed by your doctor. Do not use drugs that prevent blood clotting.

4. If the dressings on your nose are still on, keep your head elevated with at least two pillows while sleeping or resting. As much as possible, try to keep your head upright throughout the day; This will maintain normal blood circulation and help reduce post-operative swelling.

5. Some leakage from your nose is to be expected. This will be pink/light red in colour, but if there is persistent red blood, you should notify your doctor by phone.

6. When you come out of surgery, you will have two layers of plaster and a plaster splint on your nose. These are important for protecting your nose as well as shaping it. Do not touch or damage these dressings; It will be removed by your doctor within a week.

12. When the dressings on the outside of your nose are removed, you will notice some swelling and discoloration in the surrounding tissues. Your nose may appear swollen and its tip turned upward. This will correct itself over time.

13. You may feel numbness at the tip of your nose and sometimes in your upper lip. This will disappear within a few weeks.

14. After the tampons are removed, you can gently clean your nose 2-3 times a day using ear cleaning swab and tap water. Do not insert ear cleaning garbage up your nostril.

15. Even after the tampons are removed, your nose will be stuffy. This is the normal response of tissues to surgery. Do not attempt to blow your nose for a week. When you have to sneeze or blow your nose, do it gently with both nostrils open. Do not use nasal sprays or drops. If you have to sneeze, sneeze with your mouth open.

16. Fatigue and weakness are quite common after the use of sedatives or narcotic drugs you have taken during your surgery. You will feel stronger within a day or a few. Sometimes there may be insomnia. To help alleviate this, you may be given sleeping pills for the first week.

18. Once the dressings are removed, you can return to your normal work life (depending on the type of work you do). Makeup can be used to help hide minor bruises.

These are for your doctor to monitor your recovery and the development of your nose, as well as the improvement in the appearance of your nose. It is necessary for post-operative photographs to be taken for evaluation. Post-operative appointments are usually given at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months after surgery.
