Abortion, in general terms, is the termination of pregnancy. Abortion is never a family planning method. In order to prevent unwanted pregnancies, family planning methods should first be used effectively, but if an unwanted pregnancy occurs despite everything, abortion can be resorted to.
Abortion can be performed due to personal circumstances, or because the pregnancy poses a risk to your health, or because of a health problem related to the baby (incompatible with life or that may greatly affect its life after birth). In people who have had a miscarriage, abortion is performed to clean out any pregnancy fragments left in the uterus, and also for treatment purposes in cases such as stillbirth, void pregnancy and grape pregnancy (molar pregnancy).
The legal limit for terminating unwanted pregnancies in our country is the 10th week of pregnancy. (10 weeks from the first day of the last menstrual period) In married patients over 18 years of age, pregnancy is terminated with the signature of both spouses. For single patients, only one's own signature is sufficient. For those under the age of 18, the consent of the person's family is required. If the pregnancy is over the 10th week, the pregnancy cannot be terminated. The decision to terminate a pregnancy is a difficult decision. However, it is more important to allow enough time to make the right decision.
Abortion is also used for purposes other than terminating pregnancy. In case of menstrual irregularity, abortion is also performed for diagnostic purposes.
Abortion is usually performed by the vacuum method. It can be done under general anesthesia or local anesthesia. It is done using a system consisting of plastic syringes and thin plastic tube-shaped instruments called cannulas. It is entered through the cervix with a plastic cannula. The inside of the uterus is withdrawn with the vacuum effect of the syringe. Processing time usually takes 5-10 minutes. After the procedure, the inside of the uterus is checked with ultrasound. There may be mild abdominal pain and a small amount of bleeding after the procedure. After the procedure, antibiotics and painkillers are prescribed. The patient is usually called for a check-up 1 week after the procedure. There is no harm in taking a full shower on the day of the procedure.
