Warts are very common and well-known infectious diseases. The disease is caused by a virus known as HPV (HPV is the general name of the human papillomavirus family, the DNA virus family, which has more than 100 different types). The diseases caused by these viruses create different clinical types depending on where the agent is located. Although they are easy to treat, they cause frequent recurrences in some people, causing morale and motivation loss.
Why are genital warts important?
The clinical manifestations of warts are The most important among the types are those located in the genital area. Genital warts are most commonly caused by HPV 6,11,16,18. HPV16 and HPV18 are types that have the potential to cause cancer. Because oncogenic HPV infections play a role in 99% of cervical cancers in women. It is recommended that women who have genital warts or whose partners have been diagnosed with genital warts undergo a gynecological examination and have a cervical smear. The most common type of cancer in women is cervical cancer, and early diagnosis is important.
It is hoped that all these risks will decrease as vaccination against HPV becomes routine all over the world.
How are warts transmitted?
>The virus is transmitted through direct contact with an infected person or through items contaminated with the virus. After acquiring the virus, the disease development process, that is, the incubation period, varies between 1 week and 1 year. There are some factors that make infection easier. If there are small abrasions or bruises where the integrity of the skin is damaged, the virus can easily penetrate into the skin. Again, if the skin is macerated due to frequent hand washing, the virus easily passes into the epithelium. For this reason, it is more common in professional groups such as butchers, fishermen, waiters.
Another way of transmission is places visited barefoot. Transmission may occur during activities in places such as pools, saunas, dance and gyms.
Those that settle in the genital area are transmitted sexually. People with genital warts are expected to act responsibly, considering that they may infect their partners.
