LITTLE KNOWN FEATURES OF CURVICAL DISEASE
Cervical disc herniation occurs during the basic training period of us physicians; Although it is a disease that is unfortunately rarely included in the curriculum of the Faculty of Medicine, it is a very common spine disorder in society.
The frequency of its occurrence has increased statistically and remarkably, especially in the last five years.
This situation is considered to be directly proportional to the increase in "awareness and diagnosability" of the disease by physicians, rather than the spread of the causes of the disease.
Contrary to the general belief, cervical disc herniation is a simple disorder that causes only neck pain or additional back and arm pain. It is not a disease.
While lumbar disc herniation, lumbar slip, and lumbar stenosis disease, which are in the same category, threaten the functions of the organs and limbs only below the waist area of our body, cervical disc herniation can cause widespread dysfunctions that concern our entire body.
The complaints that occur in cervical disc herniation disease do not only occur as a result of the mechanical pressure of the disc tissue on the spinal cord and nerve fibers. Intricate reactions occur on the basis of the disease, in which neuro-chemical and hormonal actors take part.
The slightest dysfunction in our spinal cord, which is in relationship with all systems in our body, can manifest itself with a complaint that seems irrelevant.

For this reason, the common complaints that may occur in cervical disc herniation patients, apart from the classic trilogy of pain, numbness and loss of strength, are as follows:
- Headache: Starting mostly from the nape of the neck, in places, temples and It is the type that spreads to the eye area. It can be mistaken for Migraine and Tension type headache. It may mislead the doctor by imitating both diseases.
- Balance disorder: Although it is called dizziness by the patient, it is actually a disruption of body balance. It is defined as "walking as if drunk, the feeling of the ground being pulled out from under the feet, the feeling of being pushed."
- Palpitation: It is an increase in heart rhythm and usually the heartbeat is felt strongly by the patient.
- Anxiety Disorder: Worry. It is defined as overreacting to events, getting upset or angry easily.
- Blood pressure imbalances: While hypotension is more common in the first years of the disease, hypertension develops in later years, especially in a type of neck hernia.
- Sweating Abnormalities: Excessive sweating, especially at the scalp and on the face, is observed very frequently. However, it is not uncommon for excessive sweating to accompany a cervical disc herniation in only one part or the entire body.
- It should be remembered that complaints such as slow bowel movement, excessive coldness, distractibility and forgetfulness, and sleep disorders may also occur with a cervical disc herniation.
