How to Insert a Tube into the Eardrum?

With microsurgical techniques, the eardrum is drawn by going through the external ear canal. This procedure is called paracentesis or myringotomy. The fluid in the middle ear is vacuumed out through the hole in the eardrum. Then, the tube is placed with one end in the outer ear and the other end in the middle ear by means of special tools.

Depending on the type of tube inserted, the duration of stay in the ear varies. While there are short-term tubes that stay in the ear for 6-9 months and then spontaneously discharge from the body, there are long-term tubes called T-tubes that can stay in the ear for more than 1 year. For this, disposable vaseline earplugs can be used before each bath/shower. If inflammation or discharge is observed in the middle ear despite all these precautions, a doctor should be consulted.
