Importance of Probiotics in Nutrition

Prebiotics, probiotics should always be included in our diet…

Last week we had a short article about milk. This week I wanted to complete the topic of prebiotics and probiotic foods and milk.

What does prebiotic, probiotic mean?

Probiotics are defined as live microorganisms that affect human health positively and are used as food additives.

Prebiotics are non-digestible carbohydrate components that provide an environment for the growth and development of these bacteria. Prebiotics in the structure of fructo-oligosaccharides are found in many fibrous foods, especially in breast milk, such as artichokes, celery, leeks, asparagus, bananas. When these foods reach the intestine, they provide a suitable environment for the growth and development of beneficial intestinal bacteria. Inulin and oligofructose are the most commonly used. These bacteria help in maintaining intestinal health by increasing the number of beneficial bacteria that make up the intestinal flora. These bacteria attach to the intestinal surface, reduce the risk of infection and help metabolism. They break down some toxic food ingredients. In addition, these bacteria have benefits such as lactose (milk sugar) hydrolysis, reduction of serum cholesterol level, prevention of colon (large intestine) cancer, stimulation of the immune system.

These bacteria compete with disease-causing bacteria, producing vitamins B and K

Foods that can reduce the risk of chronic diseases that provide physiological benefits to our body, apart from their basic nutritional properties, are called functional foods. Probiotic foods are also included in this scope.

To give an example of these foods, foods such as sourdough bread, pickles, tarhana, yogurt, kefir, ayran, kumiss, yeast pastries and boza.

We should include these foods in our diet every day.
