ARTISTIC WORKS WITH AUTISTIC CHILDREN:

Art is the most natural and simple means of communication. When we cannot express our feelings and thoughts with words, we can express them using lines, sounds and movements. Art in the form of painting, music and dance is seen in all societies from the first people to the present day. Children start drawing from the day their hands can hold a pencil. Art also works as a communication tool for autistic children who have difficulty communicating with people.

On the other hand, art can also be used as a therapy tool for these children whose lives are full of difficulties compared to other children. In this area where there is no artistic concern, the individual finds the opportunity to express himself. It may be difficult to explain some traumatic experiences, painful feelings and thoughts. A person may not be fully aware of these thoughts. The use of art can facilitate the expression of emotions. Thus, the individual can become aware of his emotions through art. The products created in activities carried out using painting, dance, music, drama, sculpture and mask making reflect the thoughts of individuals.

In art therapy studies, the individual is supported to reveal his creativity. It helps ensure mind-body integrity. It allows expressing feelings and thoughts. By bringing repressed emotions to consciousness, it becomes possible to cope with these emotions. When words are not enough to tell an individual's story, symbols and dreams are used. Thus, a direct expression emerges. Since there are various ways in art, the individual has the chance to choose the technique that suits him best. Ensures support from group members in group work. It improves communication.

The aims of artistic work with children are to make the child feel accepted, to enable him to feel and realize his emotions, to create an environment for emotions to turn into symbols, to enable the child to realize his own values ​​and meaning, to develop the child's self-confidence,

Their common feature is to reveal their own existence and leave a mark. In order to do this, they draw and paint with whatever they can find that will leave a mark (pen, paint, lipstick).

Painting and drawing supports the verbal expression, which is not yet developed enough, and creates the comfort and confidence of being able to express oneself.
