"What does depression look like?" he whispered.
"It's like drowning. But you see that everyone is breathing except you."
From time to time in our daily lives, we all feel helpless, There are times when we don't enjoy something and feel unhappy. Especially traumatic life events such as divorce, dismissal, and death affect each person in different ways, albeit at different levels. After such events, people adapt to their normal lives over time and feel hopeful and happy again. Of course, there may be people who need to overcome these traumatic events with the help of a specialist.
However, when we talk about clinical depression, we see a different picture. This disorder is an extremely serious problem and reduces the person's quality of life, making him/her unenjoyable. At its most severe level, there is a risk of suicide, which requires the person experiencing this disorder to seek support from a specialist as soon as possible.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
Clinical depression manifests itself. It shows a number of symptoms. The most important of these symptoms are; It is when a person feels depressed almost every day and is no longer interested in or enjoys activities that he/she used to enjoy. In addition, the person constantly blames himself and feels worthless and insecure. Serious problems occur in sleep patterns and appetite. The person may sleep throughout the day or, conversely, have difficulty sleeping. When we examine their appetite, we see that people either do not eat at all or overeat. Due to this, he experiences serious changes in his weight.
The person loses functionality (harmony) in his social life. He isolates himself completely or partially from the outside world and does not even want to leave the house. For him, such activities require a lot of energy, and on the contrary, he constantly feels weak. He consciously wants to keep his friends, family and other people away from himself because daily life and the events that happen in this life have become extremely unimportant for him. He also said that he had nothing to tell because he was not involved in any activity.
The person's psyche is completely dominated by negativity and despair about the future. A person makes a negative inference from even the smallest event in his life and often thinks that this negativity has occurred because of himself, thus feeding and reinforcing the depressive mood and unhappiness he feels. The situation he is experiencing is a vicious circle. He has no hope of breaking this vicious circle. He thinks that he will always feel this way and that nothing will change in his life. Turning all his thoughts into negative ones when he is healthy causes him to believe that he is always an asocial, dissatisfied, worthless and unhappy person when he is depressed.
However, the person is not the same person he was when he was depressed. This disorder he experiences literally destroys his relationship with himself, his social, professional and family life. We see that most people suffering from clinical depression talk about being trapped in a hellish life, feeling a tangible pain. This situation disrupts the joy, interest and quality of life. In a very severe depression, this hopelessness and the belief that nothing will get better may cause the person to believe that the only way out is suicide, or he may try to relieve himself with suicidal fantasies.
IS THERE A TREATMENT?
The first thing to note at this point is that this disease can definitely be treated. Even though the person feels alone and thinks that he/she is the only one experiencing this problem in the whole world, he/she should know that many people like him/her experience this disorder. Choosing the appropriate psychologist and psychiatrist and striving to overcome this disorder without giving up will bring the person back to the joy of living, participating in life, and being happy. The importance of choosing the appropriate expert should be particularly emphasized here. A person must trust the psychologist and psychiatrist he visits, both as a person and as professional knowledge. In addition, it is extremely important for the person to feel that the specialist understands him and is willing to heal him, and to believe that he can treat him. In cases where this is the case, the person receives treatment He may leave his work unfinished and develop a negative opinion towards all psychologists or psychiatrists. For this reason, it is extremely normal and necessary for the person to change the specialist with whom he feels incompatible and whom he does not trust.
HOW IS IT TREATED?
The biggest mistake often made is that the person only needs medication. is that he thinks he will get better. In clinical depression, a person often needs to take medication, but medications on their own are not enough. At this point, psychologists come into play. Moreover, sometimes, especially when the reasons for the person's illness are not genetic predisposition and chemical irregularities in the brain, it may be sufficient to just work with a psychologist. A psychologist works with the patient to transform the patient's faulty or deficient mentality into a healthier one in accordance with his personality, with the various techniques he has been trained in, and he actively works with the client on the situations that cause his discomfort and tests the reality of these reasons. It also contributes to a person's better knowledge of his/her own self and increased awareness. As a result of this study, the person develops a healthier perspective on possible negative life events and problems in daily life. With the development of his awareness, his relationship with people and himself comes to a much healthier point.
Treatment with medication alone is like cleaning the wound of a person with a physical illness from above. However, in order for this to go away, it is necessary to go deeper and eliminate what is causing it. A psychologist finds what creates such a disturbance in a person's psyche and helps clear it. This does not mean that his disorder will not recur one hundred percent, but the new perspectives he gained as a result of working with a psychologist, his increased awareness, and the development of healthier defense mechanisms will help him overcome this recurrence more quickly and with less pain.
