Celiac Disease - Gluten Allergy

Celiac disease develops in individuals with a genetic predisposition as a result of sensitivity to the water-insoluble protein called gluten, which is found in grains such as wheat, barley and rye. An autoimmune enteropathy develops as a result of genetic predisposition, contact with specific environmental factors and immunological mechanisms. The disease mainly affects the proximal small intestine, but different organs/systems may also be affected. The disease can occur at any age after the addition of grains to the diet.

Celiac disease can occur at different ages. It may appear in childhood or may manifest itself later in life. The very mild progression of the disease and confusion of symptoms with different disorders may cause the diagnosis to be made at an older age. Symptoms of celiac disease may also bring to mind different diseases. In order to make the correct diagnosis, some special blood tests, endoscopy and tissue samples taken must be examined by pathology.

If there are symptoms such as anemia, osteoporosis, infertility or seizure
should be investigated for gluten. While the patient has been on a gluten-free diet for a while, one or more antibody tests may be requested. If a person diagnosed with celiac disease removes gluten from his diet, autoantibody levels should decrease. For example: salads, cough syrups, adhesive tape used on envelopes), or the patient may have celiac disease, which is rare and does not respond to changes in diet. When celiac disease tests are used to monitor disease progression, rising autoantibody levels indicate some noncompliance with the gluten-free diet.

Celiac disease tests may be negative if the person being tested has not consumed any gluten-containing foods before the test (although a negative result requires several months of a gluten-free diet). If the doctor still suspects celiac disease, he or she may prescribe gluten. The patient is asked to add gluten to his diet for a few weeks or months to see if the symptoms return. Meanwhile, celiac tests may be repeated or a biopsy may be performed to check whether there is villus atrophy (damage to the hairy protrusions in the intestines).

Although celiac disease is relatively common, most patients are unaware of their disease. This is partly due to the fact that symptoms vary. Although intestinal damage is present in tissue biopsy samples, symptoms may be mild or absent. Since these symptoms may be due to various diseases, the diagnosis of celiac disease can sometimes be missed or delayed for years.
