Effects of Pregnancy on Teeth and Support Structures

Gum diseases during pregnancy are mostly caused by poor oral care. Considering the whole body of the pregnant woman, she is so uncomfortable that a little bleeding of the gums or the onset of tooth decay is very insignificant compared to her other problems. Towards the third month, the person cannot stand the pain and has to go to the dentist. Since it is the most severe phase of pregnancy, the necessary treatment cannot be performed and teeth are lost.

During pregnancy, hormonal balance changes temporarily. Although the withdrawal of calcium from bones is held responsible for tooth enamel being more susceptible to caries during pregnancy, such an effect has not been proven with certainty. Environmental factors play a greater role in the formation of tooth decay during pregnancy.

Generally, the individual's nutrition and oral hygiene change during pregnancy. Considering that the oral environment rapidly turns towards acid as a result of frequent vomiting of acidic gastric secretion, tooth decay; It may not be due to the removal of calcium from the teeth, but because the oral environment shifts to acid.

Pregnancy is an event that causes major changes in the physiology of the female body. It is quite natural that these physiological changes are reflected in the oral tissues.

Excessive sensitivity occurs in the gums during pregnancy. Gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) is present in 40% of pregnant women, and it is thought that these gum changes occur due to the disruption of hormone balance. The addition of infection to these hormonal changes is one of the causes of gingivitis.

Stress is also important in the development of gingivitis during pregnancy. There is an increase in body hormones so that the body can gain resistance against stress. (ACTH) As a result of the hormonal imbalance that occurs in women who have a stressful pregnancy, if oral hygiene is not maintained properly, inflammation of the gums may occur.

A healthy gum is light pink in color. The typical change seen in an inflamed gum during pregnancy is that the gum margin and the gums between the teeth become swollen and red. In more severe cases The gums are swollen and turn dark red. If there is light contact with the gum, it can be seen that it bleeds easily.

For this reason, if gingivitis has occurred, oral hygiene should be maintained very well. If there is tartar in the mouth, these should be cleaned and the teeth should be brushed regularly and well. If oral care is applied in this way, gingivitis will improve in a short time.
