What is it: Every woman has 2 ovaries. She usually ovulates from one ovary every month. Fluid accumulations that accumulate in a capsule within the ovary are called cysts. While cysts may not cause any complaints, they may cause symptoms such as groin pain. Although cysts are understood as ovarian cancer, many cysts are benign and harmless.
Although they do not generally cause complaints, they can sometimes cause pressure or stabbing pain.
Why do cysts form:
Ovulation: The ovaries prepare for ovulation every month. For this reason, first the structures we call follicles grow and release an egg cell. In some cases, because this follicle does not rupture, the cyst continues to grow and remains there. This condition is completely harmless and disappears on its own after a while.
Dermoid cyst: It is one of the most common cyst types. Interestingly, hair, nails or teeth may grow out of it. Most of them are benign. However, it must be removed surgically.
Polycystic ovary syndrome: It is one of the most common causes of ovulation problems. There are many small cystic structures inside the egg. The treatment for this condition is not surgery.
Endometrioma (Chocolate cyst): It is a condition in which cells from the inner wall of the uterus appear in the ovaries. It is called a chocolate cyst because it contains dark brown content. In general, it can cause serious pain in patients, especially during menstrual periods. Depending on the condition, the doctor can either slow down its growth with medication or remove it with surgery. However, even if it is removed, there is a possibility of recurrence.
Ovarian cancers: It is found in less than 100% of all ovarian cysts. It usually appears in older ages. It may be accompanied by fluid accumulation in the abdomen. Sometimes it may not cause any symptoms until the advanced stage. For this reason, annual gynecological check-ups are very important.
How to make the diagnosis: Although ultrasound examination is generally sufficient, sometimes MRI and tomography are helpful in diagnosis.
The treatment of each cyst is different and the physician should be evaluated by. For your health, do not neglect your annual Gynecology check-ups.
