What is Marital Harmony?

Harmony in marriage is defined as the union of individuals with different personality traits to adapt to changing world conditions, to solve the problems they experience by compromise, to communicate positively with each other, to be happy and to achieve common goals.

Marriage duration affects marital harmony. There are studies investigating whether marital harmony is low in the first few years of marriage. As the duration of marriage progresses, children leave home, spouses retire and spend more time with each other, and there are studies showing that marital harmony reaches its highest level in this period. The professions of the spouses also affect marital harmony. The marital harmony of working women and the spouses of non-working women was examined and it was seen that the marital harmony of the spouses of non-working women was higher. Individuals with a higher position than their spouse in terms of professional status were found to be happier in marriage than their spouse with a lower status.

When we look at the gender role attitudes that determine marital happiness, it is stated that men have higher levels of narcissistic tendencies than women. If the woman is passive and the man shows narcissistic characteristics and the narcissistic individual can get satisfaction from the marriage, this marriage seems compatible. In studies examining the relationship between gender and dark personality traits, it is expected that individuals with dark personality traits are seen more in men in our society due to their position in business life, as they have characteristics such as high status and high self-worth

It has been observed that similarity between spouses in terms of personality traits is compatible with marriage. For example, a significant relationship was found between similarity of not lying and marital adjustment for both spouses. In another study, the empathy tendency levels of the spouses were investigated and the empathy tendency levels were found to be high in both couples with high marital harmony. The marriage of couples who can communicate mutually, exchange ideas on issues related to marriage and family, and solve their problems in a positive way is defined as harmonious. Work and marriage have been the subject of many more studies for a long time and will continue to be.

Rusell (1983) defines marital harmony as the idea that spouses are not different from each other and the respect between spouses in the marital relationship. They describe it as a union that they realize on the condition of love, sexual satisfaction and intellectual behavior. There are many factors that affect harmony in marriage.
