I did not want to start my article with a mythological story explaining the literal meaning of narcissism. Because anyone who reads a little knows this story. In fact, what is more important is not the literal meaning of narcissism but how and how much it affects all of us. It is not that difficult to recognize a narcissist. Types we encounter in daily life. First, we need to make a definition. What is narcissistic personality disorder? In its simple and understandable form, it is the state of a person thinking of himself as "something". We can also define self-conceit as a disease of seeing others inadequately.
The incidence rate in societies is 1%. But one percent is not an insignificant number. In my opinion, the number of narcissists per capita is increasing day by day. The foundations of this type of personality pathology are, of course, laid in childhood. These people cannot empathize, that is, it is impossible for them to put themselves in your shoes and understand your mood. This is the situation they have the most difficulty with. Narcissistic people are fragile and can never tolerate criticism. They cannot be attached to anyone, words such as loyalty and fidelity do not even come to their neighborhoods. Narcissism is necessary for human survival, but in reasonable amounts... Don't you think there are many people who have gone beyond measure?
A very special type of narcissism is the powerful personality organizations that produced Roman Caesars, world-famous dictators and pharaohs. They try to act as if their existence and power have no limits. Since they cannot perceive themselves as "me" in the outside world, they look for many ways to inflate their false selves. Generally, they love to be superior, to dominate, and to be on a stage where they make critical decisions regarding people's death or survival. These people can be very successful. They may also have charisma that will drag the masses behind them. They cannot put themselves in others' shoes and cannot understand others. It's as if everything serves only them. Other people's ideas exist if they serve their own purposes, otherwise they cannot tolerate opposing ideas. If their own goals, which may not be compatible with reality, are not in line with their own plans and are not in a structure that can provide material and moral gain, they cannot control their anger and may become aggressive.
Why is this pathology occurring in recent times? The probability of being seen has increased?
The individualistic perspective blinds narcissism It's clacking. No matter what, I must earn a lot, it must be mine in every situation and condition. Hypnosis (I call it hypnosis because it is in the state of the social collective) works in every situation...
Societies are growing like an avalanche with this irresistible concept of me. So how can we prevent this? Starting with our children….By learning the things that should not be done while raising children. By teaching them that sometimes losing is a virtue. By creating safe environments for them to connect. Now there are parents who miss the tip of the scale. By praising their children no matter what, they make the child a potential narcissist. It is necessary to give children opportunities to take responsibility for their actions and express their own feelings when the time comes. Without knowing that they are a narcissist, these children will accept that this situation is normal and continue to exploit others. A narcissist will never admit that he or she is a narcissist. A treatment for an unacceptable condition will not be possible.
Hope you stay away from emotional vampires…
