In this article, I will talk about the right-left hemispheres in the brain and right-left hand preference. Hand preference can be described as choosing the right or left hand to do various manual tasks such as writing, painting, using a fork and knife. First, we can focus on how hand use occurs. Our brain consists of two hemispheres, right and left. These two hemispheres govern different mental processes. Of course, the brain is not in two identical parts when we look at it from the outside, and there are many functions and regions that have not been discovered until now and are still being researched. In particular, each person's brain varies from person to person. In general, the right brain is visually oriented, looking at the whole picture rather than its details, and processes information intuitively and simultaneously. The left brain, on the other hand, is verbally focused and processes information analytically and sequentially, looking at the first part first to get the whole picture. As a result of the crossing of nerves in the brain, our right hand is controlled by the left brain, and our left hand is controlled by the right brain hemisphere. That's why the right brain is more dominant in left-handed people, and the left brain is more dominant in right-handed people. The hand governed by the dominant hemisphere will provide superior skill in performing the functions listed above compared to the other hand. The preferred hand is also called the dominant hand. In approximately 95% of people, the motor areas that control the hands are more dominant in the left hemisphere. Thus, the vast majority of people are right-handed. Although there are many theories about handedness, we see that these theories are based on genetics. One of the problems I encounter here, and the most common mistake made in this regard, is that left-handed children are directed to use their right hands for various reasons. If parents knew the problems that forcing left-handed children to use their right hands would cause now and in the future, I'm sure they would choose the healthy one for their children. Hand preference, which begins around the age of 2, becomes evident in 5-6 year old children who attend kindergarten. The important thing here is to reveal the dominant hand. However, if insisted, a left-dominant child can start using the right hand. The important point is that hand use affects the brain's ability to think, decide and dream. It is directly linked to processes such as and all circuits in the brain must work in common harmony. Although hand preference seems to change in congenitally left-handed children who are forced to use their right hand at an early age, the risk of a serious system confusion is quite high since a significant part of the innate neural characteristics of the brain will remain the same. We know that many problems such as permanent bad handwriting, stuttering, nail biting, extreme shyness, concentration problems, neurotic personality, avoidant personality development, bedwetting, memory problems and physical fatigue are much more common in children who are later forced to be right-handed. Although the fact that left-handers are few in number does not change the fact that they are different and that studies continue to be carried out on this issue, our first step should be to show respect and tolerance towards differences.
