WHAT IS OBESITY?
Obesity is one of the most important problems of today and is now considered a disease. Obesity leads to life-threatening diseases in the future and is therefore defined as "morbid obesity", that is, fatal obesity. Morbid obesity causes the development of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, which can lead to fatal consequences such as heart attack, vascular occlusion and kidney failure. It can also cause serious problems such as blindness, respiratory distress, reflux, fatty liver, menstrual irregularity, infertility, sexual dysfunction and an increase in some types of cancer. For these reasons, morbid obesity is a condition that needs to be treated in time before it causes irreversible consequences.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF OBESITY?
Excessive food intake
Sedentary lifestyle
Hormonal disorders
Genetic predisposition
Psychiatric disorders
Some psychiatric drugs
HOW IS IT DETERMINED?
Whether a person is obese or not is determined by calculating the body mass index. Body mass index (BMI) is obtained by dividing the weight twice by the person's height (height/weight squared). Evaluation of body mass index is done as follows.
If BMI < 25, UNDER
If BMI is between 25-30, OVERWEIGHT
If BMI is between 30-40, OBESE
If BMI is between 25-30, OBESE
p>IF BMI > 40, MORBID OBESE
HOW IS OBESITY TREATED?
First of all, the factors that cause obesity should be carefully investigated, according to the research results. Personalized treatments should be planned. First, the patient's nutritional habits should be examined in detail. Whether there is diet and exercise or not It should be questioned, if not done, it should first be included in a diet and exercise program. If done, it should be checked whether these have been done correctly. Detailed blood tests should be performed to reveal whether there is a hormonal disorder. If a hormonal disorder is detected, treatment is possible with medications. If no reason other than overnutrition or excessive calorie intake is detected, the patient should be evaluated for surgery by a team including endocrinology, general surgery, dietitian and psychiatry.
WHO CAN HAVE SURGERY?
Those with a body mass index over 40
Those with a body mass index over 35 and suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes and sleep abscess
WHAT TYPES OF SURGERY ARE PERFORMED IN OBESITY TREATMENT?
Stomach reduction surgeries (sleeve gastrectomy)
By-pass surgeries in which the stomach is disabled
Stomach The reduction surgery is called sleeve gastrectomy and since the remaining stomach is tube-shaped, it is also known as sleeve gastrectomy. With this surgery, approximately 70% of the stomach is removed.
WHAT ARE THE RESULTS OF OBESITY SURGERY?
At the end of obesity surgery, patients regain their weight. Weight decreases rapidly in the early postoperative period. Surgery should be considered as a start on the path to reaching the ideal weight. Patients need to make changes in their lifestyle and maintain a nutrition and exercise routine in the postoperative period. If the recommended nutrition plans are not followed, weight loss may stop and even weight gain may be observed in the future.
With these surgeries, in addition to obesity, comorbid diseases such as diabetes and hypertension may be observed. Fish are also treated. This rate reaches values as high as 85%. Many patients no longer need medications for these diseases and even no longer need to use insulin.
