Children and Mental Health Developmental Periods

Mental health, which we think begins with childhood, is actually a process that begins in the womb of the baby. The stress experienced by the mother during pregnancy and the medications she uses, some factors coming from our genes, are processes that affect our mental health. As a caregiver, the mother must be supported medically and socially in cases where she is worried or when her relatives understand that she cannot provide care.

Especially between the ages of 0 and 3, it should be a period when basic needs, love and trust are met. During this period, the emotional and cognitive state of the caregiver is important for the baby to establish a secure bond. In addition, instead of multiple caregivers, bonding with only one caregiver should be supported, where there is no mother. During this period, appropriate sleep, toilet, sexual and food training should be given to the baby. It should not be forgotten that some psychological complaints seen in adulthood are caused by childhood traumas.

In order to complete emotional development in a healthy way and to develop the social skills expected from the baby, the attention of the mother and father, meeting their needs in a short time, and tactile contact are important during this period. During this period, they can gain the ability to value themselves, regulate social relationships and comply with social rules with the trust and love they receive until the age of 5.

Between the ages of 3-6, the child develops rapid cognitive (mental), sensory (psychological) and motor skills. It is developing in terms of muscle and movement) and language (speech), and it is expected that the development will be followed and supported by parents and teachers during this period. Contribution should be made by organizing activities for the child's language development, muscle strength, cognitive and sensory development, and by taking into account the child's needs, the missing aspects should be completed by consulting an expert.

Since this period is also important in terms of identity development, the child's mother or daughter should be tried to complete the child's needs. The relationship with the father and the couple relationship between the mother and father become even more important in the development of the child. This is the period when the concepts of privacy should be taught.

In this period, instead of treating the child like a small adult, It should be remembered that each child has different characteristics and needs.

6-9 years of age is a period when starting school and especially need help in adapting to the new social environment. During this period, it is necessary for the family to make the child feel that they are there for them by listening and observing rather than being oppressive and critical. Sharing our feelings and using I language is important so that your child's stress can be reflected externally. In addition, it should be known that increased activity, new friends, increased energy, and new friends are normal in this period, and it is a period when it is necessary to pay attention to anxiety and fears, harmony with friends, adaptation to school, personal responsibilities, and excessive mobility.

9-12 years of age in the pre-adolescent period. It is a period in which his body begins to change. This period is also a period in which he begins to gain self-awareness and needs self-confidence, and his family needs puberty education. Their character concepts come to the fore, their number of friends begins to decrease and they begin to turn to their fellow humans. During this period, it may be necessary to monitor sexual identity development and, if necessary, provide expert support.
