Don't Give Your Child the Fear of Report Cards

Asst.Prof.Dr. Onur Okan Demir stated that children who bring bad report cards should not be punished.

"If the child's development level is weak compared to his/her peers, it means that the child is having problems in learning and adaptation," said Asst.Prof.Dr. Onur Okan Demir said, "These problems express the deficiencies that often exist in children with genetic inheritance, such as intellectual disability, learning difficulties, attention deficit, developmental delay, speech disorder. These children are children who need to be supported with special education on an individual basis." .

Domestic Problems Lead to Failure

Stating that domestic problems cause failure, Assistant Prof. Dr. Onur Okan Demir said, "Domestic communication problems, chronic diseases in the family, sibling The child may not be able to use his/her potential if there are problems such as birth, psychiatric disorders of family members, divorce and crowded family.Factors such as not having a room of the child or young person's own, lack of suitable conditions for studying and stress are among the reasons that negatively affect learning. These situations occur in children; "Psychiatric and behavioral problems such as depression, anxiety, bedwetting, stuttering, and nail biting may occur," he said.

Negativities Experienced at School Make Learning Difficult

Assist. He continued his explanation by stating that a problem experienced by the child at school, such as being ridiculed, peer bullying, the teacher not using effective teaching techniques sufficiently and differences in the level of the class, also cause difficulties in school success and continued his explanation as follows: "All these situations should be noticed in time and the child / young person help should be sought. Where necessary, a one-to-one customized program should be applied. The report card is an indicator that evaluates the child's cognitive-knowledge-related success, adaptation and development in all areas throughout the year. At the same time, we should not forget the support of the family and the school.

The Child Who Brings a Bad Report Card Should Not Be Punished

The report card is not only the evaluation of the child or young person, but also the evaluation of the families and the school. For this reason, it is necessary not to leave them alone and not to put all the responsibility on them. We should thank the child who brings a good report card and reward him/her if we wish. The weak plan should be organized with him/her so that he/she can be actively listened to.

You should never blame or criticize the child who brings a poor report card, and you should make him/her feel that you will solve the problem together by reviewing all this information to find out the cause of the problem.

You must show that you love him/her unconditionally under all circumstances

Getting angry, yelling, or punishing the child with a bad report card is not a solution. It is seen that children and young people who are afraid of their family's reaction become very anxious, even leading to suicide and running away from home. The best approach is to say, "We love you in any situation, you are valuable and important to us, let's investigate and try to solve the problem together." The best approach would be to get help from an expert during the summer, to provide counseling to the family, to implement a compensation program for the child/young person, and to allocate time for sports activities and rest."
