SPRING FEVER (ALLERGIC RHINITIS) IN CHILDREN

In these days when the sun is showing its face and we are breathing in the beautiful flowers and spring freshness outside, spring allergies can cause serious problems for some children and adults with allergic predisposition.

Spring fever, commonly known as spring fever. Allergic rhinitis is manifested by runny nose and congestion, sneezing, and itching in the nose and palate. Additionally, postnasal drip, difficulty in smelling, weakness and cough may develop. Constant mouth breathing as a result of long-term complaints causes palate and dental disorders in patients. In addition to these findings, some people may experience watery eyes, itching and redness, which is called "allergic conjunctivitis".

The onset is more common in childhood and adolescence. However, allergic rhinitis may also show its first symptoms in adulthood. Asthma may be observed later in one-third of people with allergic rhinitis that begins in childhood.

Allergic rhinitis may be seasonal or continue throughout the year. While only seasonal allergic rhinitis is mostly due to grass, grass and tree pollen, year-round allergic rhinitis develops due to house dust mites, cockroaches, mold and pets.

Allergic rhinitis affects the patient's quality of life. How much does it affect?

In the evaluation, how many times a week the symptoms of allergic rhinitis recur, how long they last in total, whether seasonal or year-round, whether they affect the patient's sleep patterns, school life, daily entertainment and sports activities. It is important that it does not affect the patient.

How is the diagnosis of allergic rhinitis made?

The most important step in diagnosis is the disease history given by the patient in this direction. It is important to question in which season it occurs and what triggers the complaints. Physical examination findings are aided by blood and skin allergy tests. Since allergic rhinitis may have common findings with many diseases, a specialist physician should be consulted for differential diagnosis.

What should be the prevention for allergic rhinitis?

As with all allergic diseases. Taking protective measures is the most important step. Thus, both the severity of the disease and the drug use rates are reduced.

To protect from pollen, windows should not be opened at home during periods when pollen occurs most frequently. If possible, air conditioning should not be preferred in homes. It is useful to avoid outdoor activities between 06:00 and 10:00, which are the hours when pollen is most observed outdoors, and on windy and hot days. However, if we have to be outside, we should wear sunglasses that cover the eye area and a mask for the mouth and nose area. When we return home, our clothes should be taken off and washed. In addition, a bath should be taken to remove pollen adhering to the hair. It will be beneficial to install a pollen filter for cars.

If house dust mites are a factor, different precautions should be taken. The rooms of children who are prone to allergies should be as simple as possible, and furry toys and carpets should be removed. Bed sheets and duvet covers should be washed at 60 degrees, and if possible, specially produced duvets and pillows against house dust mites should be used. Frequently sweeping the floors in the house with a broom and wiping them with a cloth moistened with clear water is useful in reducing house dust mites.

On these beautiful spring days, we hope that our children, as colorful as flowers, remain healthy and happy. …
