Requirements for stomach reduction surgery
From time to time, we encounter patients who contact us via social media, e-mail or phone and state that they want to have stomach reduction surgery, but do not meet the appropriate conditions for the operation. For this reason, I decided to write an article about the conditions of stomach reduction surgery.
Obesity can be defined as the amount of fat in the body exceeding the required level. First of all, it is worth noting that the issue here is not weight but the amount of fat. In fact, the conditions for stomach reduction surgery are determined by this.
The amount of body fat may be low in an overweight person. Athletes, such as weightlifters, can be given as examples. In other words, a person's muscle mass - and therefore weight - may be high but the amount of fat may be low.
That's why the body mass index (BMI) calculation method has been developed. Here, the height of the person guides us in measuring the fat mass.
In other words, the amount of fat is standardized according to the height of the person. So how is this done? What are the conditions for stomach reduction surgery?
First, the square of the height is calculated. The result is divided by kilos. To make an example calculation, let's take a person who is 1.60 m tall and weighs 95 kg. First, the height is squared, 1.60 x1.60 = 2.56. The result is divided by weight: 95 / 2.56 = 37.1 This person's body mass index is calculated as 37.1.
I have given the World Health Organization's body mass index classification below. You fit into that class in which range your result falls. For example, the person whose weight is calculated as 37.1 above falls into the 2nd degree obese class. This value is suitable for stomach reduction surgery conditions.
So, who can undergo stomach reduction surgery? Can obesity surgery be performed on anyone who is overweight?
The accepted criteria for Obesity Surgery are a body mass index of 40 and above or over 35 in the presence of an additional disease such as diabetes. In addition, the person must have clearly decided on surgery in order to adapt to the post-operative period.
Again, there should not be a psychiatric disorder such as schizophrenia. Milder psychiatric disorders such as mild-moderate depression or panic attacks do not prevent surgery.
Recently, obese patients Obesity surgery can be performed on patients with a lower body mass index (BMI 30 and above). At this point, I recommend getting an opinion from a physician specialized in obesity surgery.
Stay healthy..
