If the obsessive (persistent, ridiculous and repetitive) thoughts that we all experience from time to time during stressful periods affect our lives, school, work and relationships, we call this condition obsession disease (obsessive-compulsive disorder).
Germs in the house or person. , sperm etc. contamination, leaving the stove and locks unlocked, symmetry, number, will I swear?, will I molest?, will I look at sexual areas? Will I harm my child or my loved ones? Thoughts that seem absurd and alien to the person, such as these, come persistently. In order to get rid of these obsessions, the person begins to engage in compulsions such as excessive cleaning, avoiding a certain letter, counting, touching.
You can find detailed general information everywhere, but I want to provide you with different information about the treatment.
Gestalt therapy and treatment of obsessional disease:
First of all, I must emphasize that the effect of drug treatments or some classical forms of therapy is low and mostly temporary. I should also emphasize that the information I will give below may have less effect than we expect in some severe cases or in our patients with very low awareness.
The most important point I want to emphasize in the treatment is to realize that these obsessions are actually a result or defense. So the aim of therapy is; It should be drying the swamp, not fighting mosquitoes. In other words, finding and studying the person's personality structure, the poles that he cannot come into contact with and those that were burdened on him during his childhood. For example, constantly washing hands instead of expressing anger towards someone or adjusting one's life accordingly. Or, like someone who is overwhelmed by overloaded feelings of control and responsibility, deals with control obsessions instead of learning to live more irresponsibly or uncontrollably and not to feel guilty about this situation.
In other words, when a person is forced to judge life, concepts, and live in a polarized world, time When he cannot use the opposite pole according to his needs, he may suffer from obsession disease. When these issues are studied in a suitable therapy environment, the person can quickly relax, even in 1-2 sessions, and get rid of his/her obsessions thanks to this new perspective he/she gains.
In addition to this therapy method, the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy can also be used.
In appropriate cases, the use of medication can be added to the treatment from time to time.
