DISCOLORATIONS ON TEETH

Nowadays, deposits form on our tooth surfaces due to a wide variety of foods, tea, coffee and cigarette use. Many of the black and brown colorations occur due to these habits. Stains that occur on the tooth surface due to external factors can be removed to a large extent by dental scaling and polishing procedures.

Our teeth consist of 2 layers. The upper surface is the enamel surface, underneath is the dentin and in the middle is the part where the nerves are located. The main color of our teeth comes from dentin. Enamel surfaces are thinner and have higher light permeability. For some of us, the color of our teeth is generally darker because the color coming from the dentin layer is very dark. Disorders experienced during the growth and development phase of the teeth may cause discoloration in the form of lines. Dental abscesses in milk teeth during childhood may cause the underlying permanent tooth to erupt with a structural defect. Excessive fluoride intake during childhood also causes white spots to form on the teeth. In cases where this type of discoloration occurs from within, tooth whitening, porcelain laminates and aesthetic fillings are used to remove the discolorations aesthetically.
