What Does Al-Alam Say? A Breakthrough in Psychology: The Zimbardo Experiment

The subject of this article is "What will the world say?" I would like to start my article by talking about the experiment called "Zimbardo", which was carried out years ago by turning the basement of Stanford University into a prison.

In the experiment, the participants are divided into two: "guard" and "prisoner" and after a while, the roles they play become real. , the prisoners begin to think that they will not be able to leave the prison, and the guards go beyond the experiment and gain complete control over the prisoners.

Although the experiment broke new ground in the field of psychology, it was stopped after 1 week due to ethical problems. While the experiment evaluates the elements of deindividuation, submission, power and authority; It makes us think that the society we live in may also be a semi-open prison

If we look closely at the Zimbardo experiment, we will see that we repeat certain parts of the experiment in our daily lives without knowing it. Society can also be our guard at some point. This is where what the world says comes into play. “If you can't find a job, they say you are unemployed”, “If you don't get married, you stay at home” etc. Examples such as these may create the perception that society also has a say over us.

Although it may seem quite difficult for some of us to defend our thoughts and realize our wishes as we truly feel, while preserving our self-esteem and self-worth, the world cannot know our lives and wishes and not everyone can. He must be aware that he is free to make choices.

When we think that we have the right to judge others, we should remember the saying "Wear my shoes and follow the path I follow" and that all individuals have the ability to think and act differently. We must not forget that you are free to be present. Constant interference with someone else's views contradicts the concepts of personal space and choosing freely and taking responsibility for your choice.

When we put this pressure on from childhood; We create adults who are not fully "grown up" or "not allowed" to express themselves fully, who submit to authority unconditionally, or who are constantly in conflict with authority. “What will the world say” are like walls that remind us of the Zimbardo experiment. This situation exists sociologically in Turkey. It also affects individuals negatively psychologically.
