Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are the 4 teeth located on the far right and left of our lower and upper jaw. These teeth may appear before the age of 20; At the same time, there are cases where it comes out at older ages or does not come out at all and remains buried under the gum. While the eruption process of these teeth does not cause any problems in some individuals, in some individuals it may cause severe pain, swelling, restriction in mouth opening and many other problems during eruption.

First of all, let's talk a little about the eruption problem. In patients with this problem, the tooth may remain completely embedded in the bone, or some of it may be embedded in the bone and some of it may be visible in the mouth. In this way, a space called "gum pocket" is formed between the wisdom teeth, some of which are visible in the mouth, and the gum on them. Since our patients cannot reach and clean that area with a brush and dental floss, infection (pericoronitis) occurs due to plaque and bacterial accumulation in that area. As a result, problems that may affect the comfort of daily life such as severe pain, difficulty in opening the mouth, swelling and even feeding problems and difficulty in speaking may arise.

Therefore, half-erupted or never-erupted wisdom teeth are checked by the dentist at regular intervals. and appropriate intervention should be applied when necessary. Otherwise, these wisdom teeth may damage the neighboring teeth, cause recurrent infections, cysts and tumor formation in the gums or jawbone in that area.

Wisdom teeth that are in the correct position and fully erupted in the mouth may be damaged for a certain reason. The healing process after extraction due to tooth extraction (caries, periodontitis, etc.) is no different from the healing process of a normal tooth extraction. After the normal extraction of wisdom teeth, pain and swelling may be felt in that area. Avoiding rinsing or spitting for a few days, avoiding smoking and alcohol, not consuming foods with small particles that may get into the extraction space, and using prescribed medications will accelerate the healing process of the area.

Unlike normal extraction, after the dentist examination; Due to the location of the tooth, its size, the structure of its roots, bone and gum density, it may be decided to remove wisdom teeth with a surgical operation. wisdom teeth In the surgical extraction of the wisdom tooth, local anesthesia is first applied to the area where the wisdom tooth is located and a path is created to reach the tooth. After reaching the tooth, the tooth can be removed in one piece or in several pieces, depending on the situation.

What needs to be done during the recovery process after surgical extraction is no different from normal tooth extraction.
