It started with the accidental discovery that eye movements could reduce the severity of disturbing thoughts. EMDR is a powerful psychotherapy approach. It is suggested that it affects the limbic system and amygdala in our brain, which are known to be associated with traumatic experiences. Traumatic memories remain trapped in the episodic memory section of our brain for long periods of time. During therapy, the right and left hemispheres of our brain are stimulated through eye movements, allowing the memories locked in our brain to establish a relationship with our other memories. In the treatment procedure of EMDR, which includes two-way stimulation, it stimulates our neurobiological mechanisms and ensures that the memories that are locked in our episodic memory, which we do not want to talk about, are activated and transferred to our semantic memory.
The memories experienced by people, as the source of all kinds of psychological problems, are the emotions and feelings they felt in their past lives. It is thought that thoughts govern today and tomorrow. EMDR Treatment unlocks the emotional lock-in caused by trauma, aiming for people to move on with their lives by getting rid of the traces of their past and to cope with their current problems with stronger resources. EMDR therapy is applied for 50 minutes for the first meeting and description of the problem, and 90 minutes for ongoing treatment sessions.
After the treatment, the person no longer feels uncomfortable talking about his problems. He sees his memories from a new and healthy perspective. He truly believes that the events he experienced before are in the past and states that they no longer affect him negatively.
