Pregnancy and Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are seen in one in every three women during and after pregnancy. During pregnancy, many reasons such as the baby pressing on the intestines, inactivity, and a diet low in fiber cause constipation and straining. It increases the complaints of hemorrhoids, anal rupture, especially after normal birth, and abdominal pain, bloating, and constipation during the postpartum period, when mobility is already low. Anemia and iron deficiency, which develop due to blood loss during birth, progress further with hemorrhoidal bleeding and cause weakness, drowsiness, and loss of appetite in the mother.

Non-surgical treatment methods that can be applied to hemorrhoid problems that develop in pregnant women and after birth are harmful to the mother and the baby. does not give. Infrared treatment, known as laser method, or hemorrhoid ligation treatment, also known as ligation, can be corrected in a few sessions with local anesthesia. After the treatment, the mother must be supported with sufficient liquid and fiber-containing foods to prevent her from becoming constipated again.

The ligation of the hemorrhoid is done by evaluating the anus with a special illuminated speculum called an anoscope and using a tool with rubber rings on the end called a ligator. After the hemorrhoid gland is removed by vacuum, rubber rings are placed at the base. The hemorrhoid, whose blood supply is prevented in this way, dries and disappears within a few days.

In the infrared method, local coagulation is created inside the hemorrhoid with a device that emits infrared light from its tip, preventing its nutrition and ensuring drying. The same process can also be done with laser and high heat.

After these procedures, the patient can continue his daily activities. One should not strain during defecation, especially in the first week. Some medications can be used for a while to keep the stool soft. But the basic rule is to eat 2 meals a day with fiber-rich foods and drink enough water between meals.

Sclerotherapy: It is another method used in the treatment of hemorrhoids. Dilated veins are injected into the veins to form a plug. However, it should not be applied due to the high risk of thromboembolism both during and after pregnancy.
