RECOMMENDATIONS AFTER SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY

Approximately 80% of the stomach is removed with surgery, leaving a stomach with a volume of 30-50 ml. So this needs to be taken into account when eating. Eating quickly and/or in large amounts causes abdominal pain and vomiting. Patients should eat very slowly, chew well, and take breaks when they feel uncomfortable while eating. Remember that you now have a new stomach and it will take time for your body to get used to it. Persistent nausea and vomiting may occur, especially in the first 1-2 months.

After this surgery, people's sense of taste and smell may change. There may be aversion to some foods. This is a normal situation and will decrease over time.

Care should be taken to consume 2.5-3 liters of water every day.

A lot of walking should be done and lung exercises should be followed.

After surgery, leaks and leaks may occur from the stomach suture line in 1-2% of patients. Be sure to consult your doctor if you have complaints such as severe abdominal pain, fever that rises with chills and exceeds 38 degrees, shortness of breath, feeling unwell, and weakness.

It is normal for the person to have no appetite and not want to eat in the first week after the surgery. . However, one needs to be nourished. A special diet is applied for nutrition. The details of this diet will be explained below.

Diet

Immediately after the surgery:

A clear liquid, low sugar diet is applied for the first 2 weeks. Water, tea, fruit teas, broth (chicken or beef), grain-free compote, clear grain-free soups can be consumed. Protein shakes to get enough protein. Solid meals and grainy soups are definitely NOT RECOMMENDED. Soups should be low-fat and less spicy. Portions should be small and consumed slowly. Consuming it quickly may cause abdominal pain and vomiting. Carbonated drinks (soda, cola, soda, sprite, fanta, etc.) are PROHIBITED.

Between 2-4 weeks after surgery:

Due to the risk of opening and leakage in the stomach suture line, only pureed foods are allowed. Meat, potatoes and all kinds of fruit are good It can be consumed by crushing and making puree. Consuming carbonated drinks is strictly PROHIBITED for the first month after surgery. The white of a boiled egg can be consumed by chewing well. Sugar-free pudding (diabetic pudding), sugar-free ice creams (diabetic ice cream) and yoghurt can be consumed. Starting from the 3rd week, soft and low-fat cheeses, corn flakes soaked in skim milk and softened well, mashed bananas and avocados can be consumed. Protein shakes (first 2 months)

After the 1st month of the surgery:

From now on, normal foods are started. All foods should be eaten in small portions and chewed very well. Grilled or baked chicken (preferably thigh meat), red meat and fish can be consumed by chewing very well, provided that they are not fried.

WATER SHOULD NOT BE DRINKED UNTIL 30 MINUTES BEFORE MEALS AND 30 MINUTES AFTER A MEAL. DRINKS AND WATER SHOULD NOT BE DRINKED DURING THE MEAL.

Vegetables with excessive fiber should be avoided (such as green beans and okra). Milk or snacks should not be consumed alone.

After the first month, meals should be arranged as 3 main meals and 2 snacks. Boiled eggs, hummus, boiled baby carrots, boiled or baked potatoes, bananas, strawberries or any other fruit can be eaten as snacks.

Starchy foods such as pasta, rice and bread should be avoided for at least 6 months. .

Foods with high nutritional value should be preferred when choosing meals. For example, bread has very low nutritional value, but apples, bananas, fish, chicken, red meat and eggs have high nutritional value. Eggs should be consumed every day.

After surgery, some patients experience hair loss. This is a normal situation and the hair will grow back as the person resumes a normal diet.

If the diet is not followed, it is possible for the stomach to expand again and gain weight again. In this case, it may be necessary to apply surgical treatment again. Gastric sleeve surgery is the most commonly performed weight loss surgery today, and its success rates are high. However, the most important factor that determines the success rate is the patient's compliance with the doctor's recommendations and diet in the postoperative period.
