Complete recovery is achieved with surgery at rates of up to 80% in diabetic patients who cannot be controlled despite all precautions.
At this point, patient selection is of great importance. The patient's age, how long he has been a diabetic, his eating habits, and other accompanying diseases give clues as to whether the patient will benefit from surgery.
Although very similar techniques are used with obesity surgery, the target here is very much on the patient. The aim is not to provide weight loss, but to control blood sugar by increasing the power of the patient's existing insulin. Some weight loss is definitely achieved, but it can also be applied safely and its effectiveness has been proven in patients who are not overly obese.
