Popular Name: Dyslexia

Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) is the general name of the diagnosis. Learning disorder, popularly known as Dyslexia, is actually seen in three areas.

DYSLEXIA: Reading disorder,

DYSGRAPHIA: Writing disorder,

DYSCALCULIA; It is a disorder in the field of mathematics. These disorders can be seen alone or together.

SLD is not an intelligence problem. It means that the child has a problem in one or more of the areas mentioned above, although the child is at an intelligence level appropriate to his/her age.

Generally in children with SLD:

-Late speech or speech disorders in development processes,

-Delays in motor development,

-Direction and time Problems in concept development,

-Motility or slowness,

-Reluctance in learning processes,

-Problems in gaining responsibility,

-Attention, etc. Symptoms such as disorders in brain functions that affect learning,

-Delays in using and organizing time,

-Problems in reasoning and explaining events in proper order,

-Behavioral problems

SLD is generally noticed by teachers and families after the child starts school, that is, during the academic development process. However, learning is a lifelong process that begins with the child's birth. Providing adequate stimuli to the child, correct processing of role model characteristics, Playing games for communication with the child, providing adequate environments with peers, and parents spending active time with the child are very valuable for the child's physical, social, psychological and cognitive development.

Although SLD actually shows its symptoms with the disruptions in the developmental processes I mentioned above, starting from infancy. It is generally not very noticeable and the belief that it will improve over time is generally dominant.

If the child entering the school period has SLD problems,

- Not wanting to go to school, physical complaints,

- Excessive anger, aggression,

-Anxiety, fears,

-Disruptions in general needs such as sleep and appetite,

-Problems in harmony with friends, that is, in social interaction,

- p>

-Withdrawals due to reasons such as receiving frequent warnings in areas that they cannot perform,

-Performance problems We may encounter many problems such as anxiety.

If the child has academic problems, waiting with unrealistic approaches such as being lazy, unemployed, or uninterested will cause more harm to the child. Because it is not within the control of a child who is good in many areas to have problems in reading, writing and mathematics.

Although there are many studies showing that the causes of SLD include genetic predisposition, blood supply or functional problems in the learning areas of the brain. The exact cause is unknown. The incidence of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children with SLD is also higher than the normal population. In addition, other psychiatric diagnoses such as depression, anxiety disorders, obsessional disorder, and tics may accompany the condition.

It is very important to recognize children with SLD early and make the necessary evaluations by a specialist. Children diagnosed with SLD should start special education with competent special educators as soon as possible. In addition, if there is accompanying ADHD or another psychiatric condition, it is important to carry out psychiatric follow-up and treatment together.

If your child has problems in the areas mentioned above, please do not wait for it to go away. Because SLD is a condition that can be treated. I wish you to remember that it can be solved with the right education....
