The concept of beauty has gone through many stages and changed since the creation of humanity. Since ancient times, writers, painters, sculptors and even physicians have produced works that will shape the aesthetic norms of their time, played an active role in changing the shape of the concept of beauty and caused tastes to change. There are two elements in facial beauty that have been almost unaffected by these trends for centuries. The first is the eyes, which are the mirror of the soul and do not allow much change, and the second is the pearl-like teeth.
No matter how good the person's facial structure, skin tone and skin smoothness, and the harmony of the shape of the eyes and nose are; Inadequate oral hygiene and dental alignment disorders hinder beauty and make it invisible. A person who is disturbed by his own reflection in the mirror cannot be happy due to his lack of self-confidence, nor can he spread happiness to those around him.
Throughout the history of dentistry, function and aesthetics have always gone together. Since a dentistry based solely on function without aesthetics is unthinkable, countless techniques and materials have been developed over the years to eliminate tooth deficiencies and improve their aesthetics.
Gum problems due to poor oral hygiene and genetic factors are treated by periodontology, and caries due to the same reasons are treated conservatively. Although treatment and endodontics, correction of crookedness orthodontics, treatment of bony disorders, jaw surgery, and rehabilitation of deficiencies are the areas of interest of prosthetic treatment branches, no branch of dentistry can move away from aesthetics.
Once oral hygiene is corrected, gum problems are eliminated, bone and dental health. If there is a disorder in the alignment of the teeth after completion, orthodontic treatment should definitely be considered as an option. However, in some cases, even if the teeth are in their normal alignment and proper function is achieved after orthodontic treatment, the size, shape, surface structure, color and gum levels of the teeth may continue to disturb the person.
In order for the porcelain laminates applied to the teeth to serve without any problems, it is necessary to pay careful attention to many elements from planning to the end of the treatment. The teeth to be treated with porcelain laminate must not have any gum problems or looseness. Bruises should be treated beforehand, if necessary. l treatments should be done. The movements of the teeth during closing and chewing should be carefully analyzed and the shape and size of the prostheses to be made should be decided. The models obtained from the measurements are examined and a design is created by overlapping the intraoral and frontal photographs taken from the patient. The design is created using the wax modeling technique (wax up) on the models, and a silicone template is removed so that it can be seen in 3D in the patient's mouth. An acrylic-based plastic material is placed tightly inside the silicone template and the design in the model is transferred into the mouth. At this stage, incompatibilities in the design and desired shape changes are eliminated, and the relationship between the jaws and chewing function are tested. The changes made in the design are recorded and porcelain laminates are produced within the necessary procedures and adhered to the teeth.
Porcelain laminate treatment is not always applied only to meet aesthetic expectations and for an aesthetic smile. In some cases, they also find application within certain procedures in patients with reduced vertical dimension or crossbite who cannot make smooth side movements due to problems in the chewing plane. While they can be made to cover only the front surface of the teeth, they can also be extended to the biting and chewing surfaces, increasing the vertical dimension (face height) and regulating the movements of the teeth over each other. In this way, the patient is provided with a comfortable grinding and speaking function.
