Nasal polyps are flesh tissues originating from the sinus cavities and filling all sinuses and nasal passages. These meats hang from the sinus cavities into the nose, just like a bunch of grapes. It is not known exactly what causes polyps. However, it is more common in people with allergies. Complaints of nasal congestion, runny nose and inability to smell are prominent in patients. Recurrent sinusitis attacks are observed in these patients. As polyps fill the inside of the nose, patients become unable to breathe. After a while, they can't smell. Their quality of life deteriorates greatly.
Some of the nasal polyps develop due to chronic sinusitis and the recurrence rate after surgical treatment is very low. Some of them present with an unknown cause, which we call widespread polyposis. The recurrence rate after surgery is higher in these patients.
HOW ARE NOSE POLYPS TREATED
The most effective drug in the treatment of nasal polyps is cortisone. Cortisone can be used orally, by injection, or as a nasal spray. If the patient has signs of acute infection, antibiotic use may be necessary. If there is no improvement despite drug treatment, polyps must be removed with endoscopic sinus surgery.
