My CHILD DOES NOT WANT TO GO TO SCHOOL!!
We often hear that children do not want to go to school for different reasons, and this is generally considered normal. It disappears on its own shortly after going to school. However, sometimes the child's unwillingness to go to school is constant and you can't get anywhere with the methods you apply yourself.
What are the reasons why children do not want to go to school?
There may be different reasons why children do not want to go to school. The situation we call 'separation anxiety' is one of these reasons. The child has difficulty separating from the mother, father or caregiver. She may cling to her legs and cry, repeatedly saying she doesn't want to go to school, whining or yelling. He suggests reasons such as stomachache, nausea, headache for not going to school. It is especially common in children starting school for the first time. It can be considered normal, but if it continues for a long time, if the symptoms and the problems experienced by the child are severe, if they continue after going to school, it is useful to follow up and get help from a specialist when necessary. Prolonged and increasing can be a serious and urgent situation.
The child's unwillingness to go to school may also be associated with psychiatric disorders such as depression, social phobia, anxiety disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity, special learning difficulties, mental retardation, and conduct disorder. These and similar situations often require help and psychiatric treatment or counseling. If no precautions are taken, the problems continue to increase and become chronic, causing difficulties in treatment.
Some life events may also affect the child's inner world deeply and contribute to the child's unwillingness to go to school. For example, separation of parents, communication problems within the family, problems with a teacher or friends, presence of violent behavior at home or the arrival of a new sibling can be counted among the reasons. For this reason, the family environment in which the child grows up, caregivers, family elders and relations with them should be investigated and a detailed history should be taken by obtaining information from all necessary people.
The protective, protective attitude and behavior of the family above the norm Memories, high anxiety levels of the mother and/or father, or a recent depression can be counted among the reasons why the child does not want to go to school. The parent may even take the things that the child has to do according to his/her age by saying "oh my child, don't get upset", "as long as he doesn't get tired". As a result, the child has difficulties in how to deal with difficult situations, how to behave when left alone, and cannot learn how to cope. It's like a fish out of water. It either 'stumbles' or 'gears into reverse so as not to stumble', SO ESCAPE AND AVOID. Ultimately, his self-confidence dwindles. The situation can be a little more difficult and serious if it is a child who is already less self-confident and often needs support and motivation.
What is School Fear?
What to do or how to behave?
A family whose child does not want to go to school must first be understanding and tolerant towards their child. * The family should calmly ask questions such as how the child is feeling, what he thinks or what he is afraid of, and carefully review the points that they think may disturb the child (for example, school, friends, etc.). *Methods such as coercion, threats or bargaining should never be used. Such methods may cause the unwanted behavior to become more established and become chronic.
*In addition to all these, a stable attitude should be displayed in going to school and it should be emphasized that going to school is not optional.
*If the child's reluctance to go to school persists and the family's efforts in this regard are insufficient, professional help should be sought. Because a thought that "it will pass anyway" will prevent the problem from being noticed and deprive the child of the chance of early diagnosis and treatment.
