De Quervain's Disease

It is an inflammation of the tendon and tendon sheath that manifests itself with pain and swelling radiating to the base of the thumb of the wrist and forearm. It is inflammation of the tendons of the muscles that move the thumb, pulling it away from the other fingers (abductor pollicis longus) and bending it backwards (extensor pollicis brevis). It is a very common and easily diagnosed disease. Irregularity and swelling occur between the tendon and the tendon sheath, and as a result, the lubricity between the tendon and the tendon sheath decreases.

Causes:

Grasping, compression, squeezing, Repetitive activities such as twisting and typing cause the tendons of these two muscles to become compressed in the canal they pass through. These movements cause wear, degeneration, and inflammation in tendons and tendon sheaths. Inflammation and resulting swelling occur in the synovial tissue around the tendon.

Thus, it becomes difficult for the tendon to slide and move within its sheath. Similar symptoms may occur at the beginning or during the course of some inflammatory rheumatism such as rheumatoid arthritis and gout.

Symptoms:

Restlessness and pain on the thumb side of the forearm are the first symptoms. is a symptom. Pain may radiate to the wrist and thumb. A friction sound may be heard in this area during the movements of the thumb.

What are the treatment methods for De Quervain tendinitis?

The aim is to reduce uncomfortable pain and swelling. Preventing strenuous movements and physical therapy can relieve symptoms. Your doctor may recommend resting your thumb and wrist with splints. In addition, oral anti-inflammatory drugs can also be added to the treatment. As another treatment option, steroid-cortisone injection can be applied to the compartment where the tendon is located. All of these non-surgical treatment options help reduce swelling and also pain.

If the symptoms are prolonged and there is an increase in complaints, surgical treatment may be recommended. The area containing the tendons can be surgically opened to widen the narrow area and relieve the tendons. As a result of these treatments, you need to work with a physiotherapist for the normal use of your hand.
