Sleeve gastrectomy, also known as sleeve gastrectomy or stomach reduction surgery, is one of the methods we use for the surgical treatment of obesity. In a normal diet, the amount we can eat or drink at a time depends on the width of our stomach. Depending on the situation, it is possible to eat 2-3 or more portions of different foods at one time. In gastric sleeve surgery, the stomach is cut in the vertical axis, making it smaller and reducing its volume. On average, 70-80% of the stomach is removed in this surgery. In sleeve gastrectomy surgery, it is important to remove the top part of the stomach, called the fundus. It is one of the most important factors affecting weight loss. Since the fundus part is the place where satiety reflexes are activated and the hunger hormone called ghrelin is secreted the most, it is important to remove it with this surgery.
In sleeve gastrectomy surgery, special instruments called staplers are used that can both cut and stitch (staple) the stomach. Different regions of the stomach tissue have different thicknesses, so choosing the appropriate stapler for the tissue thickness is very important.
As with all obesity surgery interventions, it is not possible to achieve permanent success in sleeve gastrectomy surgery without making lifestyle changes. If there is no lifestyle change, it is possible for patients to regain weight in 3-5 years.
Leakage and bleeding are among the complications that may occur in these surgeries. Leakage is defined as millimetric openings in the stitches in the stomach, resulting in stomach contents leaking into the abdomen and forming an abscess, which causes a systemic infection.
Care should be taken to ensure that the teams performing the surgery are competent in the management of possible complications as well as the surgery itself. Leaks can be life-threatening if a timely and correct approach is not taken.
Learning proper nutrition after surgery, mastering the concepts of protein-carbohydrate and introducing regular exercise into our lives are the key points for healthy and permanent weight loss.
