Approximately 10-15 percent of Turks suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a chronic disorder that can cause bloating, gas, abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits. Avoiding these five foods may bring some relief.
- 1. Milk
Milk and other foods containing lactose, such as cheese and ice cream, can cause gas and bloating in people who are lactose intolerant. 70 percent of adults worldwide cannot produce sufficient amounts of the intestinal enzyme lactase, which helps break down the sugar in milk. It is known that as a result of lactose not being absorbed in the small intestine, bacteria ferment the undigested lactose and form gas.
- 2. Foods High in Fructose

Some very healthy foods, such as apples, pears and dried fruit, are high in naturally occurring fructose, which when eaten can trigger some of the same side effects as undigested lactose. In this case, the best thing to do is to eat more fruits that do not contain much fructose, such as strawberries, citrus fruits and bananas.

Since the bubbles in drinks such as soda can have a similar fizzy effect on the GI system, it would be healthier to drink water or lactose-free milk to quench thirst. In addition, fructose is often found in high amounts in fruit-based drinks, which can increase digestive system problems.
- 4. Caffeine
Caffeine may increase diarrhea, another important symptom of IBS. Sources of high caffeine include coffee, tea, cola drinks, chocolate.
- 5. Sugar-Free Chewing Gums
Many sugar-free gums are made with artificial sweeteners such as sorbitol and xylitol, which have been shown to cause diarrhea. In addition, chewing gum causes more air to be swallowed, which can increase gas.
